The Slice: Which is the best planet?

You know how The Slice annually ranks the planets near Earth Day?

Sure. Well, this year you can get in on the action. Just submit your own ranking. Earth does not have to be your No. 1, and including Pluto is optional. But be sure to offer a brief reason for each planet’s place on your list.

Let’s move on.

Slice answers: “I have given the right-of-way to cross the road for chipmunks, squirrels, quail, peacocks, cats, dogs, lynx, coyote, cows, horses, mountain goats, buffalo and mud turtles,” wrote Trudy Zaborski. “In one instance, my husband and I had no choice in the matter. We were on a country road in Canada and I commented what a beautiful sight it was to see a herd of galloping horses to my right on the open range. Suddenly I yelled at my husband that they were coming right at us. All he could do was stop the car.

“Shortly thereafter we were surrounded by 60 to 75 horses crossing the road to graze the open range on the other side. As he went by, the wrangler tipped his hat and they all continued on their way.”

Charlene Luzynski was driving on a narrow, North Idaho backroad last summer when she came upon a moose resting in the middle of it. “I sat in my car for over an hour waiting for her to get up and move.”

Marcia LeMaster said her husband, Brett, recently stopped his car for a family of quail crossing a road near Moran Prairie Elementary School.

Obviously, that was the right thing to do. Especially since the birds were using a crosswalk.

You have one week to think of what to get her: “I just wanted to share with you that my mom, Mary Jane Kindschy, is turning 103 on April 9th,” wrote Marigail Sulpizio. “She still plays the piano, almost daily, and she is still living in the condo that she and my dad moved into in 1991 when they moved up from Moscow to Spokane.”

Marigail wonders how many others there are around here in that age group.
