Clinical Research Organizations Protect Investigational Products in Clinical Trials with SmartSense

Kurt Percy (Executive Director of Operations for Velocity Clinical Research's Midwest region) and Brian Bailey (Regional Unblinded Lead, Tekton Research) share their experiences leveraging SmartSense for safety and compliance in clinical trials. Clinical Research Organizations (CROs) like Velocity and Tekton work on many investigational products that are temperature sensitive, requiring careful monitoring of fluctuations and maintenance of proper conditions. The SmartSense solution ensures peace of mind for these research organizations and their project sponsors—many of which are large pharmaceutical manufacturers.

[Kurt Percy] Yeah. I'm Kurt Percy. I'm the Executive Director of Operations for Velocity Clinical Research's Midwest region.

[Brian Bailey] My name is Brian Bailey. My company is Tekton Research. We are in charge of clinical trials, [we’re a] third party. You know, we deal with Moderna, Pfizer, Janssen, etcetera. What I do is, I take care of all the pharmaceuticals of the company where it's investigational—product, devices, vaccines, things like that.

[Kurt Percy] I oversee 10 sites in Velocity and all the clinical research operations we have going. So that's dozens of trials at every site, overseeing patient safety, data quality, and our day-to-day operations. So number one is compliance, making sure that the IP, the lab samples, everything that we do is safe and that we're getting good quality data from the products that we use.

[Brian Bailey] A lot of our investigational product vaccines are temperature controlled. We were with a company before and we had a lot of issues with missing reports, missing data.

We wanted a company that, you know, if a power outage happened, it's still read, and we were able to get it when the power came back on. And SmartSense answered all that for us.

[Kurt Percy] We're a rapidly growing organization, so the ability for us to continually add on sites and bring SmartSense online to those sites really quickly, that's really helpful for us.

[Brian Bailey] Literally, we got in touch with SmartSense in March, and we got online in April. You know, even sponsors were like, wow. We thought it was going to be a huge issue, you know, having missing temperatures and stuff like that. And SmartSense and even the team, you know, stable contact with them, and they helped us all the way through. So it was a smooth transition. It helped us get more studies from different sponsors. You know, we were able to provide data in consistent intervals.

[Kurt Percy] We chose to partner with SmartSense because of the history of quality there. I've been with SmartSense for 7 years now, so I've got a lot of experience. Just really like the people working there. Always great service.

90K+ sites continuously monitored

SmartSense by Digi manages more than 90K+ sites for leading brands in healthcare, retail, food service, education, and transportation and logistics.

As a medical organization, ensuring refrigeration units are working effectively and processes are being followed properly is absolutely critical. The temperature and performance graphs that SmartSense provides have not only been helpful in expediting repairs by our refrigeration vendor, but has enabled us to zero in on which models of refrigeration devices are most reliable, directly informing our purchase decisions. We are excited to be able to take advantage of the new SmartSense platform.

We've been through other technologies, and we've seen challenges associated with connectivity. We've seen challenges associated with reliability, and we have not seen those challenges since our implementation of SmartSense. Given the previous experiences Vail Health has had with other IoT solutions, we wish we would have gone to SmartSense a long time ago. We truly value the partnership and look forward to continued engagement to ensure that we're managing all the safety and compliance for the facility.
