Physical Activities Towards Health and Fitness

(PATH FIT -4)

CHOICE OF DANCE, SPORTS, MARTIAL ARTS, GROUP EXERCISE AND
ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES
Sport - means all forms of
physical activity which, through
casual or organized
participation, aim at expressing
or improving physical fitness
and mental well-being, forming
social relationships or obtaining
results in competition at all
levels.
What are the different types of sports?
The different types of sports
categories are:
•Individual Sports
•dual Sports
•Team Sports
•Extreme Sports
It can also be further divided
into individual sports (e.g., boxing,
figure skating), partner sports
(e.g., table tennis, badminton),
and team sports (e.g., volleyball,
Team sport
A team sport is a type of sport where the
fundamental nature of the game or sport
necessitates the participation of multiple
individuals working together as a team
Example are;
 Volleyball
 Basketball
 Soccer
Football and more
History of Volleyball
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by
William G. Morgan, physical
director of the
Young Men’s Christian Association
(YMCA) in Holyoke,
Massachusetts.
It was designed as an indoor sport
for businessmen who found the
new game of basketball too
vigorous.
 Morgan called the sport “mintonette,” until a
professor from Springfield College in
Massachusetts noted the volleying nature of
play and proposed the name of “volleyball.”

 The original rules were written by Morgan and

printed in the first edition of the Official
Handbook of the Athletic League of the Young
Men’s Christian Associations of North
America (1897). The game soon proved to have
wide appeal for both sexes in schools,
playgrounds, the armed forces, and other
organizations in the United States, and it was
subsequently introduced to other countries.
 Volleyball -is a team sport in which two teams of six players
are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by
grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized
rules.
 volleyball, game played by two teams, usually of six
players on a side, in which the players use their hands
to bat a ball back and forth over a high net, trying to
make the ball touch the court within the opponents’
playing area before it can be returned.
 To prevent this a player on the opposing team bats the
ball up and toward a teammate before it touches the
court surface—that teammate may then volley it back
across the net or bat it to a third teammate who volleys
it across the net. A team is allowed only three touches
of the ball before it must be returned over the net.
 Volleyball requires a minimum of equipment and
space and can be played indoors or outdoors.
 The game is played on a smooth-surfaced court 9
metres (30 feet) wide by 18 metres (60 feet) long,
divided by a centre line into two equal areas, one of
which is selected by or assigned to each of the two
competing teams.
HOW TO PLAY VOLLEYBALL?
 Players may not step completely beyond the centre
line while the ball is in play.
 any number can play volleyball. In competition each
team consists of six players, three of whom take the
forward positions in a row close to and facing the
net, the other three playing the back court.
 Play is started when the right back (the
person on the right of the second row) of
the serving team steps outside his end line
into the serving area and bats the ball with
a hand, fist, or arm over the net into the
opponents’ half of the court.
 Theopponents receive the ball and return it
across the net in a series of not more than
three contacts with the ball.
 This must be done without any player
catching or holding the ball while it is in
play and without any player touching the
net or entering the opponents’ court area.
The ball must not touch the floor, and a
player may not touch the ball twice in
succession.
A player continues to serve until his team
makes an error, commits a foul, or
completes the game.
When the service changes, the receiving
team becomes the serving team and its
players rotate clockwise one position.
the right forward shifting to the right back
position and then serving from the service
area.
 Either team can score, with points being awarded
for successfully hitting the ball onto the opposing
side’s half of the court, as well as when the
opposing side commits errors or fouls, such as
hitting the ball out of bounds, failing to return the
ball, contacting the ball more than three times
before returning it, etc.
 Only one point at a time is scored for a successful
play.
 A game is won by the team that first scores 25
points, provided the winning team is ahead by 2
or more points, except in the fifth set, when a
team needs to score only 15 points and win by 2
points
MOST COMMON FUNDAMENTAL
SKILLS IN VOLLEYBALL
1. SERVING
2. PASSING
3. SETTING
4. ATTACK OR SPIKE
5. BLOCKING
6. DIGGING
 Theserve is the act of putting the ball in play
by a player sounds simple, but actually it
describes one of the most important plays in
the game of volleyball. The underhand and the
overhand serves are described below.
 Underhand Serve
 Overhand ServE
 JUMP SERVE
 Pass is the end of the opposing team's attack. Also,
passing means the beginning of your team's volleyball
attack. After resisting an attack of the opponents,
volleyball players should aim to make a successful pass
and send a ball to one of their teammates on the court.
Initially, a pass goes over the net.
 Passing in volleyball means you hit the ball at the upper
body level. This is usually done to direct the ball to
another teammate. This teammate for the majority of the
time is the setter. You can use this move when receiving
a serve from the opposing team. It can also be a dig.
 Settingis the second step of passing, and it can
be done to either dump the ball over into an
undefended spot or to “set” the ball into a
position that allows the hitter to spike it over.
The perfect set is a high ball, just inches from
the net. A Setting in Volleyball is the act that
puts the ball in position to be attacked. It is the
second touch on the ball of a Volleyball team.
 Blocking in the sport of volleyball is a
defensive play that is accomplished by 1,
2, or 3 front-row players jumping and
pressing their arms over the net in an
effort to "block" the opposing hitter.
Blocking is one of the most worked-on
skills out there.
A dig is a defensive bump that keeps
the ball from hitting the floor when it's
sent to your side of the court with an
offensive .
SPIKE OR ATTACK
 Thespike is the most effective attack in high levels
of play, used by each team to score points. It is
generally on the third and final touch and involves .
 Anattack is a soft tip or hard spike contact hit by a
player who sends the ball over the net on the
second or third contact.
Defense
- is defined as what a group of players does to
prevent opponents from scoring or sliding out.
Volleyball defense consists of both blocking and
backcourt digging or contacting the ball.
Volleyball defense is a reaction to offense.
Position in Volleyball
 Setter
 The setter is the main contributor to the offense of the
volleyball team. One of the requirements of the setter is
having a delicate touch to set the ball perfectly for one of
the attacking players. Communication is extremely
important for the setter because they need to get the rest of
the players on the same page. Without the setter, there
wouldn’t be hard spikes or technical ball movement.
 Outside Hitter
 The outside hitter is also known as the left-side hitter and is
the lead attacker in the offensive strategy. To be a successful
outsider hitter, you must be able to jump high, be quick on
your feet, and be ready to adapt to different situations. The
volleyball won’t always be placed where the outsider hitter
would like, so they need to be prepared for hits from a
variety of places.
 Opposite Hitter
 Also known as the right-side hitter, these players need to be a
perfect balance of both offense and defense. They will also get
many opportunities to hit the volleyball, so similar to the
outside hitter, jumping ability is vital. The main difference that
sets the opposite hitter apart is their defensive responsibility.
Being able to receive the serve from the opposing team is just
one of the many requirements of this specialized position.
 Middle Blocker
 The middle blocker, sometimes known as the middle hitter, is
the tallest player on the volleyball team. Their main role for
the team is being the first line of defense against the opposing
team’s hits. The middle blocker needs to read the other
team’s attackers to quickly raise his or her arms above the net
in a blocking attempt. However, this is not a defense-only
position. The middle blocker will have chances for quick points
throughout the set.
 Libero
 The libero can become confusing for non-volleyball
players. They can only play on the back row of the court,
and because of this, are the ideal person to receive a hit
from the opposite team. There are set rules the libero
needs to follow, such as not attacking the ball at the net,
playing a set for an attacker from the front, and more.
You can always tell a libero apart from the rest of the
team because they wear a different colored jersey.
 Defensive Specialist
 The thing that sets the defensive specialist apart from
other volleyball positions is their ability to substitute out
any player on the court. This will count against the
team’s total of 12 substitutions. The defensive specialist
traditionally focuses on ball control and passing and
works well with the libero.
The 2000 Olympics introduced significant
rule changes to international competition.
One change created the libero, a player
on each team who serves as a defensive
specialist. The libero wears a different
colour from the rest of the team and is
not allowed to serve or rotate to the front
line. Another important rule change
allowed the defensive side to score,
whereas formerly only the serving team
was awarded points.
