Biotechnology:

Shaping the
world
Made by TAYYABA YASIR
This Presentation will be focusing
on two branches of biotechnology :
Plant and medical biotechnology.
Significance of Biotechnology
• Biotechnology is very important in both plant and medical fields. In
plants, it helps scientists create crops that grow faster, need less
water, and can resist diseases and insects. This means farmers can
grow more food to feed the growing population. In medicine,
biotechnology is used to make vaccines, insulin, and other life-saving
drugs. It also helps doctors find and treat diseases earlier through
better tests. Overall, biotechnology improves our health and food
supply, making life better for people around the world.

What is biotechnology?
🔬 Definition of Biotechnology
• Biotechnology is the use of living organisms, cells, or
biological systems to develop products or
technologies that improve human life and the
environment.
Two types of biotechnology
🏥 1. Medical Biotechnology
Medical Biotechnology is the use of living cells and biological processes to
develop medicines and tools that help diagnose, prevent, and treat diseases.
• Example: Production of insulin for diabetics, vaccines, gene therapy, and
cancer treatments.
🌱
2. Plant Biotechnology
Plant Biotechnology is the use of scientific techniques to improve plants by
altering their genes. It helps develop crops that are resistant to pests,
diseases, or extreme weather conditions and have better nutritional value.
• Example: Genetically modified (GM) crops like pest-resistant cotton or
vitamin-enriched rice (Golden Rice).
Advantages of plant
biotechnology

• Increases crop yield (more Helps in faster growth and better quality
food production) Saves time and cost for farmers

2 4

Produces pest-resistant plants

(less need for pesticides) Improves nutritional value (e.g., Golden Rice
with vitamin A)
Develops drought- and disease-resistant crop
Advantages of medical
biotechnology.
•Personalized Medicine: Creates medicines tailored to a person’s
genetic makeup, improving effectiveness.
•Vaccine Development: Aids in developing vaccines quickly, such
as for COVID-19.
•Gene Therapy: Offers the potential to cure genetic diseases by
repairing faulty genes.
•Production of Medicines: Enables mass production of important
drugs like insulin, growth hormones, and monoclonal antibodies.
•Regenerative Medicine: Supports the development of stem cell
therapies to regenerate damaged tissues or organs.
•Reduced Side Effects: Biotech drugs often cause fewer side
effects compared to traditional treatments.
•Infectious Disease Control: Identifies and controls outbreaks
through advanced diagnostics and treatments.
Conclusion
• Biotechnology is a powerful field that uses science and technology to
improve our lives. Two important types are plant biotechnology,
which helps grow better crops, and medical biotechnology, which
helps treat and prevent diseases. These technologies offer many
benefits, but we must also think carefully about their effects on
health, the environment, and society. By using biotechnology
responsibly, we can solve real-world problems and create a better
future.
