“LARO” is the Pilipino generic term
for all forms of recreational play.
Filipinos say “Laro tayo” meaning
“Let’s play” whether they wish to
play for fun without concern for
consequence or engage in a highly
competitive contest.
Laro ng Lahi is a cultural treasure
(yaman ng lahi) cherished by
generations of Filipinos. Its favorite past
time that is close to the hearts of
Filipinos, encompassing generations
from our grandparents, to our parents,
and among the youth & toddlers of
today.

The first “Palaro ng Lahi” was held in Laoag,
Ilocos Norte, on February 10, 1984,
sponsored by the provincial government in
cooperation with the DECS.

Laro ng Lahi (Indigenous games in the
Philippines) was coined and popularized
by the Samahang Makasining (Artist
Club), Inc. in 2012 with the help of
National Commission for Culture and the
Arts and is used by the other Philippine
Local Government Unit, other
organizations and other institution.

However, even before coining “Laro ng Lahi”
by the National Commision for Culture and
Arts, kids were already gathering in the streets
or in their neighborhood playground to play
their favorite Pinoy games. Where children,
usually using native materials or instruments,
commonly play these games.
Three types of Palarong Lahi
Three types of Palarong Lahi
• SINGLE/INDIVIDUAL GAMES
Individual games are games which are played
by single participants or relay teams to inject
and add competition in the class.
• DUAL GAMES
Dual games are sets of activities done
by two more than two players.
• GROUP GAMES
Group games are sets of activities which require more
than four (4) members of the team. They are usually
practiced in class as their supplemental activities or
lead-up games.

1. Sipa
Sipa is a traditional Filipino
game that tests a player’s
balance, coordination, and
kicking skills. It involves using a
small object, usually made of
woven rattan or a washer with a
colorful tail, which players keep
in the air by repeatedly kicking
it without letting it touch the
ground.

2. Piko
Piko is a classic outdoor game
played by children in the
Philippines. A geometric figure
with numbered sections is drawn
on the ground, and players use a
flat object as a "pamato" (marker).
The game challenges players'
balance and accuracy as they hop
across the sections to retrieve their
pamato.

3. Palosebo
Palosebo is a traditional Filipino
game played during fiestas. A tall
bamboo pole is greased and set
upright with a prize at the top.
Participants compete to climb the
slippery pole and reach the prize,
requiring both physical strength
and strategy.

4. Trumpo
Trumpo, or top spinning, is a fun
and skillful game using a spinning
top and string. Players wind the
string around the trumpo, throw it
into a designated area, and watch
it spin. The goal is to keep the
trumpo spinning the longest or to
knock others' tops out of the circle.

5. Saranggola
Saranggola is a traditional
Filipino game where players craft
and fly kites made of bamboo,
paper, or plastic. It’s a fun,
competitive activity often played
in open fields with good wind.

1. Tumbang Preso
Tumbang Preso is a Filipino game
where players throw a slipper to
knock down a can while avoiding
being tagged by the "it" player,
who guards the target. The game
ends when a player knocks over
the can and retrieves the slipper.

Patintero is a team game where
players try to cross a grid while
avoiding being tagged by the
opposing team. Quick moves and
teamwork are key to winning the
game.

4. Luksong
Baka
Luksong Baka is a Filipino game of
jumping and agility. One player
crouches to form the "baka" (cow),
and others take turns jumping over
them. The baka gradually increases
height, challenging players to jump
higher with each round.

Tinik
Luksong Tinik is a game of skill and
coordination played by teams. Two
players form a "tinik" (thorn) by
placing their hands and feet
together to create a barrier. The
other players take turns jumping
over the "tinik," which becomes
progressively higher.

Agawang Base is a lively group
game that involves two teams with
designated "bases." Players guard
their base while attempting to tag
opponents and invade the enemy
base. The game emphasizes
teamwork, strategy, and agility.

Kadang
Kadang-Kadang, or stilt racing, is a
fun and competitive game using
wooden or bamboo stilts.
Participants race to the finish line
while balancing on the stilts,
testing their speed, coordination,

Pitik-Bulag is a Filipino game where
one player closes their eyes, and
the other flicks their hand and
shows a random number of fingers.
The player with closed eyes
guesses the number. If correct,
they win, and players switch turns.

The Sack Race is a classic game
that challenges players to hop their
way to the finish line while inside a
sack. It’s a test of speed, balance,
and determination, often played in
festive or sports events. This game
requires players to remain inside
their sack, jumping forward as fast
as possible without falling over.

10. Calamansi Relay
The Calamansi Relay is a popular
Filipino game that tests players'
balance and concentration. Players
must carry a calamansi (lime) on a
spoon and race against time,
making sure not to let it fall. It’s a
fun game that adds excitement and

Tug of War is a thrilling team game
of strength and strategy. Two
teams compete by pulling opposite
ends of a heavy rope, aiming to
drag the other team across the
center line. It’s a great game for
teamwork and friendly
competition.

Batong Bola is a traditional Filipino
game where players showcase their
aim and precision. The goal is to hit
a specific target using small stones
or balls. This game develops hand-
eye coordination and is often
played casually in rural areas or
during school events.
