Why?
Different terms in ELT
• Mistake , Error, slip

• Error, Slip, Attempt

• Pre-systematic, systematic, post-systematic

• Mistake : not systematic, learners know the correct form, rare
occasions, inattention, can self-correct

• Error: Systematic, can’t self-correct

• slip :caused by temporary factors such as a learner being tired,

nervous, excited or distracted

Think back to your own language learning
experience. Did you like it when the teacher
corrected your errors? Why?/why not?
Types of Errors
Types of Errors
• 1. Structure: tense/word order
• 2. Vocabulary: lack of vocabulary or inappropriate use
• 3. Poor pronunciation/stress & intonation
• 4. Appropriacy
• 5. Avoidance
• 6. Fluency and etc.
Management

• Managing Errors can differ based on level and individuals , still can be
summed up in these 3 questions:

• What to correct?
• When to correct?
• Who should correct?
• How to correct?
What to correct
1. Comprehensibility

2. Frequency

3. Pedagogical focus

4. Individual student concerns

When to correct
• On the spot
• Delayed
• Stage of the lesson
• Fluency or Accuracy
Who should do the correcting
• Self-correction

• Peer correction

• Teacher correction
Self Correction
• It is obvious that helping students discover and correct their own
errors not only gives them confidence and motivation, but also helps
them be independent
Peer Correction
• Students are responsible for the learning process

• This correction type is easy to understand for those who commit the
error

• It will result in an increased STT and lower the TTT

• If learners know that they are responsible for correcting errors in the
class, drawing their attention towards the lesson will be easier.
Teacher’s Correction
• Isolate the problem
• Appreciate the correct part
• Teachers should use more positive than negative language in verbal
and written responses. Correction should be done gently and with
respect
• Give the correct form
• The students have to use the correct form (not only approving it)
How to Correct
Self-correction

• Lack of confirmation:
• Pinpointing:
• Gestures & gimmicks
• Mouthing
• Echoing
• Using Fingers
• Reformulation
• Grammatical Terms
provide correction
