Basic Geophysical Interpretation
using Petrel
This a free basic manual for new users of Petrel to quickly
get up to speed with geophysical interpretation using
Petrel.
As with all things in life, practice makes perfect, so keep
practicing and learning beyond what is covered in this
manual. Godspeed!!!
Set Coordinate Reference System (CRS)
File – project setup – project settings – coordinates and units – coordinate reference
system (select)
Set CRS
Choose your coordinate system - OK - Check if the settings are okay – OK
Import Seismic
Home – import file - Choose your seismic data and select the correct file type (SEG-Y
seismic data) - Open - Check if input is ok – OK – you should see your imported data
in the input bar
Import well header
Home – import file - Choose your well header and select the correct file type (Well
heads) - Open - Check if the column matches your header and delete the columns
you don’t need – OK
Import well logs
Right click on wells – Import on selection - Choose your well logs and select the
correct file type (Well logs (ASCII) - Open – Ensure the right wells are matched to the
right file names – OK – Input data – Logs – Specify logs to be loaded - OK
Data Visualization
Visualize data in plan view (view from the
top)
Visualize data in 3D
Visualize cross section of seismic
data and interpret. You can also
display the vertical trace of your
well
Visualize generated maps or
surfaces in map view
Visualize well
logs
Home – Window – Select appropriate window – Select appropriate data for the
appropriate window

Well Section Window
Seismic scanning and realization
Right click on your seismic data (DFP) – Realize – Scan – (choose your desired
realization quality ) – Realize – OK – You should have a new seismic data called DFP
(Realized) 1
Seismic attribute
RC on DFP (realized) 1 – Volume attributes – Under attribute, select your desired
attribute (for us variance (edge method) and structural smoothing) – tick Realize -
Apply

Intersection
player
Home – Players – Intersection player (used to move and display different sections of a
3D seismic data)
Home – Tool palette (contains the tools to perform different interpretation tasks)– select
Seismic interpretation
Home – Folder – new interpretation
folder – a new interpretation folder
should appear in input bar – double
click it to open its settings, info –
name (rename the folder to fault
folder)
Repeat the same process and
rename the new folder to Horizon
folder
Seismic Interpretation – fault and horizon

Fault
tool
Right click on fault folder – new fault – fault Draw out the trace of your fault and
interpretation 1 should appear in the tool palette horizon using the fault and horizon tool
Right click on horizon folder – new seismic horizon respectively

Surface/Map Generation Boundary
Fault
polygon
Double click on the horizon you want to
convert to a surface – Operations –
Convert points/polygons/surfaces – Create
fault polygons and map – Select the fault
folder in the input bar and insert it in the
Fault folder tab on the settings window –
Run - OK - (you should have a new folder
containing the generated surface.
Boundary and fault polygon)
Faulted surfaces
A B Seismic interpretation – Make surface -
Insert the surface, boundary and fault
polygon in the right place –Geometry – tick
Note: The generated surface (A) has no Automatic (from input boundary) –
visible fault trace, hence we need to insert Algorithm – untick fill inside - Apply
the fault into it to look like surface (B)
Well Log Correlation
To add a new well
top/horizon
Home – Folder – New well tops
folder – Open tool palette – select
well correlation – on the well
section window, pick your well
top/horizon of interest
Well Log Interpretation

y e
Make a copy of DT log – Rename copy of DT to Velocity and change the Template to
Velocity – OK - RC Velocity – Calculator – Type in the velocity formula and set the
right template - ENTER - OK
Velocity Modelling
For specifying For inserting
For adding the type of velocity of
layers velocity values Models
tab
Seismic interpretation – Velocity model – advanced velocity model – insert the
surfaces to be used for the velocity model- Specify the velocity type – insert values
of velocity – Apply – (The results will be displayed in the Models tab)
Depth Conversion

time
Surface in
depth
RC on the surface or fault to depth convert – Domain convert by active velocity
model – You should have a surface or fault in TWT and Depth
