Today in our online classe we shall be discussing the topic (L’article)
french Article. You will be learning the different types of article in
french, its form and its uses.
Article is a word that is used with nouns to give definitiveness or
indefinitiveness of the noun. The French article is used to identify or
show the gender of nouns (masculine or feminine) and the number
of nouns (singular or plural). Article is placed compulsorily before
most common nouns in French e.g le garçon, la fille, l’étudiant, les
tables, un crayon, une chaise, des stylos. In this lesson, our will be
mainly on 2 different types of article in french, its form and its uses.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF FRENCH ARTICLES
• For the sake of this lesson, we shall discuss only two types of
french articles, its form and its uses.
• 1 Article défini - Definite Article (The)
The definite article is used to express the definitiveness of a
noun.
• 2 Article indéfini - Indefinite Article (a, an, one, some)
The definite article is used to express the indefinitiveness of a
noun.

• From the table, you will observe that the masculine singular definite article is in
two forms: Le, l’. They are used with every masculine singular nouns. In other
words, they show the masculine gender of a noun and singular in number. But Le
is used specifically with singular nouns that start with a consonant and some
aspirated h. Exemple
• Le garçon

L’ is a masculin singular definite article that used with singular masculin
nouns that start with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u and silent h). This mean that when
le is in contatct with nouns that start with a vowel, the letter -e-in the le is
replaced with an apostrophe and becomes l’: exemple
