impact ATYCHIPHOBIA and ACADEMIC

RFORMANCE OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT

OF SAN JUAN ACADEMY, INC.
CHAPTER I
Background of the Study
In recent years, atychiphobia,
commonly known as the fear of failure,
has gained increasing attention,
particularly among high school
students who face significant societal
and academic pressures.
Background of the Study
Atychiphobia is an extreme fear of
failure that can lead individuals to
procrastinate or avoid situations where
they do not feel assured of success.
This often results in setting unrealistic
goals, which only heightens the
possibility of failure (Cleveland Clinic,
2024).
Background of the Study
On the other hand, academic
performance involves factors such as
the intellectual level, personality,
motivation, skills, interests, study
habits, self-esteem or the teacher-
student relationship. When a gap
between the academic performance
and the student's expected
performance occurs, it refers to a
Background of the Study
Sehgal M. et al. (2022) found that
atychiphobia causes anxiety and fear of
losing significant others' attention during
evaluations. Students feel continuous
pressure from memorization, exam
preparation, and concerns about their
academic futures. Gaikwad and Sharma
(2023) described atychiphobia as a
multifaceted psychological condition
Background of the Study
Various factors influence atychiphobia,
including personal experiences, familial
expectations, and societal pressures. It often
results in lower self-esteem, reduced
motivation, and negative academic outcomes.
By examining the prevalence and impact of
atychiphobia on senior high school students'
academic performance, the purpose of this
study is to provide valuable insights into how
this fear affects students' academic
achievements and well-being. Furthermore,
Statement of the Problem
1. What is the level of atychiphobia of
the senior high school students when
taken as a whole and when grouped
according to grade level, strand and sex?
2.What is the level of academic
performance of the senior high school
students when taken as a whole and
when grouped according to grade level,
strand and sex?
3.Is their any significant relationship
HYPOTHESIS
There is no significant relationship
between atychiphobia (fear of failure)
and the academic performance of senior
high school students at San Juan
Academy, Inc.
Theoretical Framework
This study uses Need Achievement
Theory to explore why some students
are more motivated to succeed than
others. This theory focuses on two key
principles: the desire to achieve success
and the fear of failure. If a student's
motivation to succeed is stronger than
their fear of failure, they will engage in
tasks. Otherwise, they will avoid them.
Theoretical Framework
Achievement motivation is seen as a
personality trait but also depends on
situational factors like the probability and
rewards of success (McClelland, 1961;
Atkinson, 1974). This study examines how
atychiphobia (fear of failure) impacts the
academic performance of senior high
school students at San Juan Academy, Inc.
It suggests that students with a high need
for achievement are more likely to take on

Significance of the Study
The result of this research will be
beneficial to the students, faculty and
staff, parents and guardian,
educational institution, and future
researchers.
Significance of the Study
Students. This study will help
students determine the relationship
between atychiphobia and academic
performance, understand the impact of
atychiphobia on their academic
performance, and become more self-
aware. By seeking appropriate support
to overcome their fear of failure,
students can enhance their academic
Significance of the Study
Faculty and Staff. This study serves
as a guide for teachers and other
school staff to use the findings to
identify students who may be
struggling with atychiphobia. This will
enable them to provide targeted
interventions and support, fostering a
more supportive learning environment.
Significance of the Study
Parents and guardians. This study
will help parents and guardians
understand the challenges their
children face. This understanding can
improve parental support and
encouragement, helping students
manage their fears and achieve
academic success.
Significance of the Study
Educational Institutions. This study
will help schools to use the research
findings to develop policies and
programs that address student mental
health and well-being. This can lead to
a more holistic approach to education,
where academic performance and
mental health are given equal
importance.
Significance of the Study
Future Researchers. This study will
help future researchers determine the
relationship between atychiphobia and
academic performance of students.
Additionally, it will enable researchers
to use this study as part of their body
of literature when conducting similar
research.
