Bread Winner Project

By: Amr Eyad, Ahmed Sherif, Mohamed Islam, Seif Haitham,

Marawan Tamer
Q-1
How was Afghanistan before and after control of the
Taliban.

Amr Eyad
The beautiful city of Kabul had become a
.

city of ruins and bombed out buildings.

Many buildings had become bricks and
dust. The restaurants and stores were
gone.
Q-2
What is Parvana's father's view about
education? What does this say about him? Why
do you think he thinks that way?

Ahmed Sherif
Both her parents had been to university, and they
believed in education. This tells us that her father
believes that education is significant and powerful
( strong, well educated and independent) and be for
everyone including girls ( because at the time girls
couldn't go to schools nor university) that's why he has
.

taught his children to read and write (Dari and Pashtu) .

Also tells them stories like : Malali. He thinks that way
because he himself has experienced and known the
importance of education.

He has gone to university in England. knows

Dari ,Pashtu and English. Education made him become
a history teacher and when the Taliban came he couldn't
become a teacher any more, education helped him by
working with his daughter in reading and writing letters
and selling stuff. So for him education is the base for
building a country ( without education the
country is nothing).
Q-
3
Who is Malali? What do you think she
symbolizes?

Ahmed Sherif
Malali is an historical figure , a young woman, who motivated
Afghan troops when they were losing and led the to victory during
the British war. She symbolizes what an Afgahn woman should be
strong, fearless, and can influence and effect a change in her
country. Father motivates his daughters by inspiring them with the
story of Malali to make them strong, brave and take on challenges.
As he was taken from the soldiers he yelled to pravan " take care
of the others, my Malali".
.
Q-4
The chores that they had in the
household. What does it say about
Paravana's character?

Amr Eyad
Its Parvana’s sole responsibility to carry water
for the family, as she’s the only one in the
family who can go to the tap alone without
.

attracting unwanted attention from

the Taliban. At times, Parvana resents this, but
she also cares deeply for her family, so
sometimes she’s proud. When the Taliban
arrest Father, Parvana must draw on all of
these qualities to survive in the difficult
situation she finds herself in.
Q-5
What happened to Paravana's father? Why
do you think they arrested him? Comment
on the decision made by the mother to
search for him in prison.

Mohamed Islam
Pravanas father lost one of his legs and suffered
during the bombing in Kabul , Taliban soldiers .

arrested pravanas father for having a foreign

education, I think it was a very bad decision to
go search for father at the prison as the prison .

was dark and ugly and also because mother got

beaten up with sticks across her back

Q-6
On page 45, Parvana’s father makes the
statement, “We are Afghans. This is our
home. If all the educated people leave,
who will rebuild the country?” If you
were put in this situation and could choose to leave and be safe or risk your
life to protect your country, what would you do?

Marawan Tamer
I would choose to leave the Country
because a lot of people fight in the
war and I won’t make a slight
difference like the soldiers I wouldn’t
want to be a victim and I don’t want .

to get tortured by the conditions of

war even though some people see it as
being a hero nobody really wins so I
would go live in another country to
have a better future than
being a victim of war
Q-
7
How were Paravana's family affected
after the father's arrest? Explain
.

Seif Haitham
Pravana’s father got
arrested so parvana and her
mother and her sister were
left with no male adult in
.

their family, so they were

stuck in their house
without a father. they were
struggling financially with
money, food,
water and supplies.
Q- Mention one theme in the story with
evidence.

8 Mohamed Islam

.
an example of a theme in the breadwinner is
theme of suffering as pravana’s father lost one
of his legs and suffered during the bombing in
Kabul . there's also a theme of unfairness as
Taliban soldiers arrested pravana’s father for .

having a foreign education. And Girls couldn't

get educated, and couldn’t go outside the house
unless accompanied by a husband or brother.
They were forced to wear a burqa and chador.
Taliban turned kabul from a beautiful city
to ruins and dust.
Thank You!!
