Math 5 Q4 W4 Day 1 2

This document provides instruction on calculating the volumes of cubes and rectangular prisms. It begins with examples of appropriate volume units for different objects. Students are guided through the steps to solve routine volume problems, including understanding the problem, identifying the relevant formula, calculating the volume, and checking the answer. Non-routine problems can be solved using multiple strategies like looking for patterns or working backward. Sample word problems are provided for students to practice applying the steps. The document concludes with an assignment for students to analyze and solve additional volume calculation problems.

MATHEMATICS 5

QUARTER 4
WEEK 4
DAY 1-2
Solving Routine and Non-routine
Problems Involving Volume of a
Cube and Rectangular Prism in
Real-Life Situations Using
Appropriate Strategies and Tools
Which would be an appropriate unit of measure
for the volume of the following? Write mm3 cm3
dm3 m3 .
1. a soap box
2. a truckload of sand
3. wall cabinet
4. water in an aquarium
5. a stock room
How do you
What find the
volume of a
is rectangular
prism?
volum volume of a
cube?
e?
Do you have toys at home?

Where do you usually put them after

playing?
Why do you need to put them in their
proper place or container?
Jessa has a box where she keeps
all her little toys. Its length is 3 in.
Its width is 4 in. Its height is 5 in.
What is the amount of space
enclosed in the box?
In solving routine word problems, it
involves using at least one arithmetic
operation. We will be using the
following Polya’s famous formulated
steps in solving the problem.
Step 1: Understand

a. Know what is asked.

The problem is asking for the amount of space that

is enclosed in the box.
Step 1: Understand

b. Know the given facts.

The dimensions of the box are 3 in, 4 in. and 5 in.

Step 2: Plan

Determine the operation or formula to use.

We know that the box is a rectangular prism.

Therefore, we use the formula
V=l×w×h
Step 3: Solve

Show how the solution is done.

V = l×w×h
V = [3in.×4in] 5 in. V = 12 in.2 × 5in.
V = 60 in3 or 60 cubic inches
Step 4: Check and Look Back

Verify if the answer is correct.

Use inverse operation.

60 ÷ 3 = 20
20 ÷ 4 = 5
The answer is correct.
Non-routine problems can be solved in
multiple ways and strategies.
Some of the different strategies used in solving non-
routine word problems.

• Look for a pattern

• Guess and check
• Work backward
• Make a model or visualize the problem
• Break up the problem into smaller parts and solve
each part.
Read each problem, then solve by following the steps in
solving problems.
1. Alice has a paperweight in the shape of rectangular
prism. Its height is 6 cm, length is 5.2 cm and width is
4.9 cm. What is its volume?
a. What is asked?
b. What are given?
c. .What operation or formula to be used?
d. Solve, show how the solution is done
e. What is the answer?
2. How much space in a room will a cabinet occupy if it
is 1.9 m long, 0.61 m wide, and 2.74 m high?
a. What is asked?
b. What are given?
c. What operation or formula to be used?
d. Solve, show how the solution is done
e. What is the answer?
Activity

Solve these problems.

1. How much space in a room will a cabinet occupy if it

is 1.9 m long, 0.61 m wide, and 2.74 m high?

2. A box is 3.5 dm long and 6 dm high. Its volume is

210dm^3. How wide is it?
How do you solve problems involving a cube
or a rectangular prism?

What are the steps in solving word

problems?
Directions: Read and understand the given problems.
Choose the letter that corresponds to the correct
answer. Write your solutions and the letters of your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.
