Chapter 5

Augmented
Reality (AR)
Overview of augmented reality
- A newer technology called augmented
reality (AR) enables users to overlay
computer-generated content on top of the
real environment. AR describes a real-time
perspective of a physical environment.
Building a mixed reality out of which
components are combined with augmented
computer-generated pictures. Typically, the
augmentation takes place in real-time, in a
semantic context, and with environmental
data elements.

2
Overview of augmented reality
- The core concept of augmented reality is to
merge or blend the picture of the real world
with computer visuals that display additional,
virtual content. Its persuading impact is
realized by making sure the virtual content is
recorded and in alignment with the physical
things. The virtual world evolves when a
person moves across an environment and their
perspective view of actual items changes.
Moreover, content should be displayed from
the same angle.

3
Overview of augmented reality
- A real-time direct or indirect view of the physical real-world is known as
augmented reality (AR). An improved or augmented world that includes
virtual computer-generated objects it with information. Augmented reality is
the integration of digital information with the user's environment in real-
time. Unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally artificial environment,
augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays new
information on top of it. A live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-
world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated
sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.

4
Virtual reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) vs
Mixed reality (MR)

5
Virtual reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) vs Mixed
reality (MR)
- With ongoing advancements in computer vision and the exponential growth of processing
capacity, mixed reality, augmented reality, and virtual reality (MR)Technology is taking
center stage more and more. Several applications overlap one other, and functions of these
new technology, these names occasionally get mixed together or are used in incorrectly
The main differences between them are explained below

6
Virtual
Reality
(VR)
7
Virtual reality
- VR is fully immersive, which tricks your
senses into thinking you’re in a different
environment or world apart from the real world.
Using a head-mounted display (HMD) or
headset, you’ll experience a computer-
generated world of imagery and sounds in
which you can manipulate objects and move
around using haptic controllers while tethered
to a console or PC.

8
Virtual reality

- Using VR devices such as HTC Vive,

Oculus Rift or Google Cardboard, users can
be transported into a number of real-world
and imagined environments. The most
advanced VR experiences even provide
freedom of movement – users can move in a
digital environment and hear sounds.
Moreover, special hand controllers can be
used to enhance VR experiences.

9
Virtual reality

- Most VR headsets are connected to a

computer (Oculus Rift) or a gaming console
(PlayStation VR) but there are standalone
devices (Google Cardboard is among the
most popular) as well. Most standalone VR
headsets work in combination with
smartphones – you insert a smartphone, wear
a headset, and immerse in the virtual reality

10
Augmented
Reality (AR)

11
Virtual reality
- In augmented reality, users see and interact
with the real world while digital content is
added to it. If you own a modern smartphone,
you can easily download an AR app and try
this technology. There’s a different way to
experience augmented reality, though – with
special AR headsets, such as Google Glass,
where digital content is displayed on a tiny
screen in front of a user’s eye.
