This document discusses different phases of search and rescue (SAR) and alerting. It describes three SAR phases - uncertainty (INCERFA), alert (ALERFA), and distress (DETRESFA). Each phase is triggered by different situations that indicate increasing levels of concern for an aircraft's safety. The document provides details about the criteria and procedures for notifying the appropriate authorities when each SAR phase is activated.

SAR & ALERTING 2
Types of SAR Phases
• Uncertainty (INCERFA)
• Alert (ALERFA)
• Distress (DETRESFA) SAR & ALERTING 2 UNCERTAINTY (INCERFA)
• when DOUBT exist as to the safety of an
aircraft and it’s occupants SAR & ALERTING 2 UNCERTAINTY (INCERFA) • A pilot fails to report within 15 mins a) of dep; after notifying ready to taxi/take -off from an unattended aerodrome b) of posn; with ests. at next reporting point OR schedule reporting time c) after a pre-arranged freq. change d) when called by a ground station if maintaining continuous listening watch SAR & ALERTING 2 UNCERTAINTY (INCERFA) – cont. • An aircraft fails to report within 30mins after ETD from an unattended aerodrome, as notified by the pilot
• An aircraft fails to arrive
• An aircraft is known or believed to be subject
to irregular operations SAR & ALERTING 2 ALERT (ALERFA)
• APPREHENSION exists as to the safety of an
aircraft and it’s occupants
• During INCERFA subsequent comm checks
fails to reveal any news of the aircraft SAR & ALERTING 2 ALERT (ALERFA) • An aircraft given an approach and landing instructions from an ATC unit or landing information from a Flight Service unit fails to land within 5 mins of the ETA and comms with the pilot could NOT be established SAR & ALERTING 2 ALERT (ALERFA) • an aircraft is known or believed to be experiencing impaired operating efficiency to the extent that it is having difficulty in maintaining height or making a normal approach and landing SAR & ALERTING 2 ALERT (ALERFA) • an Aircraft is known or believed to be subject to irregular operations or is lost and there is reason to believe that the safe conduct of flight is in jeopardy
• Subject to bomb warning in flight
• Duration of INCERFA exceeds 30 mins
SAR & ALERTING 2 DISTRESS (DETRESFA)
• There is REASONABLE CERTAINTY that an
aircraft and it’s occupants are threatened by grave and imminent danger and requires immediate assistance SAR & ALERTING 2 DISTRESS (DETRESFA) • During ALERFA, further attempts to establish comms and more widespread enquiries failed to reveal any news of the aircraft
• Fuel on board is considered to be exhausted
or to be insufficient to enable the aircraft to reach safety, UNLESS a SARTIME has been notified SAR & ALERTING 2 DISTRESS (DETRESFA) • Information received which indicates that the operating efficiency of an aircraft has been impaired to the extent that a forced landing is likely • Information received which indicates that an aircraft is known or believed to be subjected to unlawful interference SAR & ALERTING 2 DISTRESS (DETRESFA) • The duration of ALERFA has exceeded one hour SAR & ALERTING 2 NOTIFICATION The emergency alerting phase shall be advised initially by the most direct means to the Shift Supervisor, Nadi ACC who will inform the Standby SAR Officer, followed by the AFTN (ALR) message consisting of the following: SAR & ALERTING 2 a) SAR Phase b) Unit reporting c) Nature of the emergency d) Full flight plan details e) Time last comms received, by whom & frequency used f) Last posn. report and how determined g) Colour and distinctive markings of aircraft h) Action taken by reporting unit i) Other pertinent remarks SAR & ALERTING 2 ALR FPL MSG EXAMPLE (ALR=INCERFA=NFFFZRZX - FAILS TO REPORT POSITION - N563MG-IG - C206/L-SDHWYZ/D - NFFN1811 - N0140A070 B578 - NWWW0632 NVVV - E/1100 P/01 R/UV S/M J/LFV SAR & ALERTING 2 ALR FPL MSG EXAMPLE D/01 05 C YELLOW C/BRENT) e) 1858 NADI A/G FREQ 8867 KHz f) ALBAB DR g) WHITE WITH BLUE TRIM h) RPTD CALLS MADE ON 8867, 5643 & 13261 KHz i) NWWW & NVVV TWR ADVSED ON INCERFA) SAR & ALERTING 2
