Approximation
General English: a value or quantity that is nearly but
not exactly correct (Oxford dictionary)
Term in ELT: A coping strategy which involves either
circumlocution or substitution in the face of ignorance
of the correct form.
Compensation
General English: something, typically money, awarded
to someone in recognition of loss, suffering, or injury
Term in ELT: The ways in which speakers may
compensate for a lack of language skills and
knowledge.
Discussion
General English: the action or process of talking about
something in order to reach a decision or to exchange
ideas.
Terms in ELT: A type of text which seeks to discuss the
issue rather than to persuade the reader / hearer of the
truth of a proposition.
Drill
General English: a tool or machine with a rotating
cutting tip or reciprocating hammer or chisel, used for
making holes.
Term in ELT: Any technique based on repetition or
cueing.
Also referred to as pattern practice.
Conclusion
It is significant to know terms and their definitions in
ELT.
Terms help to make sure that every teacher is
mentioning the same concept.
Terms prevent misunderstandings during discussions.
