Forensic Hair Analysis Techniques

Hair can provide forensic examiners with several key details. Through microscopic examination, examiners can first determine if a hair sample is from a human or animal. If human, an examiner may be able to determine the person's race and what part of the body the hair came from. An examiner can also tell how the hair was removed, whether naturally, forcibly, or cut with a dull or sharp instrument. Structurally, hair has an inner and outer aspect. The inner aspect contains a cuticle, cortex, and sometimes a medulla, while the outer aspect has a tip, shaft, and root.
