WHAT IS A CASE STUDY?

By definition, a Case Study is a chronological sequence of facts and events that
describes the present scenario of an agribusiness firm. It is oftentimes descriptive
in nature that guides the reader-analyst on what is going on with the agribusiness
enterprise, what are its present problems and management concerns, how and
why the problem happened, and what appropriate action can be proposed to
address them.

There are two types of agribusiness case; the issue case and the appraisal
case. In dealing with an issue case, the reader-analyst is usually tasked to
analyze and search for the problem and make decisions to address them. On the
other hand, appraisal case dealt mainly on evaluating the alternative action
already made by the management. In this type of case, the problem(s) is already
specified and the role of the student-analyst is to simply evaluate each alternative
to choose the best.
Commodity System Case Versus Enterprise
Case
• Agribusiness case studies can be also categorized based on its
scope and level of analysis (micro level or macro level). Normally
the micro level case focuses on the discussion of the current
scenario confronted by an agribusiness enterprise (oftentimes called
also as an enterprise case). The information and facts presented
herein pertains to the overall operation and management of the firm
being studied.

• On the other hand, macro level case (also called commodity system
or industry case) describes the overall performance of a certain
commodity system being studied. The information and facts
presented therein includes a discussion and appraisal of the
different subsystems and how each subsystem affects the total
commodity system. Instead of analyzing an individual enterprise, the
study focuses on appraising the aggregate behavior of the total
industry including the external and internal forces affecting it.
