Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour.
‘Psychologist’ is a broad title used for individuals who
are either social scientists or academic professionals or clinical professionals, depending upon the kind of work they do in the field of psychology. It involves an in-depth understanding of the behavioural patterns of humans and animals and treating them without medication. I. Social scientists (Research Psychologists) teach psychology in colleges or universities or conduct psychological research.
II. Academic Professionals (Applied Psychologists)
conduct various programmes applying psychological techniques and theories, and relate psychological researches to real world problems, questions and issues in business, industry or government.

Psychology in itself is a very subjective and vast field of study
and hence is divided into various topics: 1) Experimental psychology – includes the various experimental methods such as questionnaire, survey or observation of behaviour that can be employed in various branches of psychology. 2) Cognitive psychology - the study of thought processes, memory and language. 3) Physiological psychology – It explains the relationship between the psychological processes and the structure and functions of the brain and nervous system. 4) Comparative psychology - study of the behavioural differences and similarities between species. . 5) Developmental psychology – is the study of the change of psychological processes as children grow into adulthood. 6) Social Psychology – It studies the psychology in relation to the society and behavior of individuals in groups and with other people. 7) Abnormal psychology – involves the study of behaviors that are different than normal. 8) Applied psychology – is concerned with the application of psychology to various practical problems 9) Psychology of individual differences – includes the study of various personality traits and qualities that differ from person to person Specialized Areas
Clinical Psychologists :They work in mental , handicap or
psychiatric hospitals, or rehabilitation centres and clinics, or also in old age homes and children’s home. They help the mentally or emotionally disturbed individuals and help people to deal with life stresses. Developmental Psychologists : They are concerned with the behavioural changes that take place in an individual as he grows from a child to an adult. Some psychologists deal with the behavioural patterns while some deal with the changes that take place during maturity and old age. Educational Psychologists: Their work mainly involves designing, developing and evaluating educational programs. They work with children having difficulty in learning or having emotional problems or children who behave a bit • Experimental Psychologists: They conduct experimental research in order to study behavioural processes like motivation, thinking, attention among humans and animals. They study and understand similarities and differences amongst individuals and effects of genetic and neurological factors in behaviour.
Industrial, organizational and marketing psychologists:.
They use their knowledge and skills to solve the problems related to human resource and planning HR policies, training and development and organisational development in the firm. An industrial psychologists works with the management in order to develop variuos training programs and reorganise the work settings thus bringing about an improvement in the Engineering Psychologists: They work in close association with engineers and technicians to designs and develop systems that require human and machine interaction. Eg. Kiosks, ATM machines etc. Consumer Psychologists: These psychologists work with the marketing department, conducting research and understanding the consumer. Psychometists: They use various methods and techniques that they studied in order to acquire and evaluate psychological data. They work with intelligence, personality, aptitude tests among others.
