Red Biotechnology 3 PPT 2021

- Medical biotechnology, also known as red biotechnology, uses living cells and materials to research and produce pharmaceuticals and diagnostics to treat and prevent human diseases. - Important figures in vaccine development include Edward Jenner, who pioneered the concept of vaccination using the cowpox virus, and Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin, who developed the inactivated and oral polio vaccines, respectively. - Common types of vaccines include monovalent vaccines containing one antigen and polyvalent vaccines containing multiple strains of the same antigen. Recombinant vaccines produced using genetic engineering were an important breakthrough, with the hepatitis B vaccine being the first approved recombinant vaccine.

What is Immunization?
• the procedure by which the body
is prepared to fight against
infectious disease.
•It is used to induce the immune
resistance of the body to a
specific disease.
How do we develop/acquire
Immunization?
Passive Natural Immunization
• Immunization is acquired from the
mother between and after birth.
• Passive Artificial Immunization
Immunization is develop by injecting
previously prepared serum from
humans or animals.
How do we develop/acquire
Immunization?
Active Natural Immunization
• Immunization is acquired by
activating immune system in the
body to produce antibodies.
• Active Artificial Immunization
immunization is achieved by
administration of vaccines and toxoids.
Dr. Edward Jenner

• He pioneered in the
concept of vaccine.
Alexander Flemming
• He accidentally
discovered the antibiotic
penicillin.
Dr. Albert Sabin
He discovered oral polio
vaccine
He discovered inactivated
polio vaccine

Dr. Jonas Salk

What are the different types
of Vaccines?
• Monovalent Vaccines- contains a
single strain of a single antigen.

• Polyvalent Vaccines- contains

two or more strains of the same
antigen.
PATHOLOGY
• It is the branch of science that
focuses with the causes and effects
of various diseases and serves as
bridge for medicine to develop
possible treatment.

What is the first Recombinant vaccine?

• Recombivax HB vaccine (1986)

Stimulates
immune
systems
against
bacterial and
viral infection.
What is the first Recombinant drug?
In 1982 FDA approved Humulin, a
recombinant insulin made from
Genentech specially modified
bacteria.
 FDA approved
Genentech's
recombinant HGH,
a drug called
Protropin, making
it only the second
recombinant

be sold in the
U.S.

• In the year 2020, a new Biogen
Alzheimer’s disease drug was

safe and effective in treating
patients with cognitive impairment
due to mild to severe Alzheimer’s
disease.
PANDEMIC
- According to brittanica.com
- outbreak of infectious disease
that occurs over several
countries or continents and
affects a large percent of the
population.
EPIDEMIC
- a disease that affects a
large number of people
within a
community,population or
region.
OUTBREAK
- a sudden increase in
occurences of a disease in
a particular time and
place.
COVID 19
VACCINES
Who should be vaccinated first?

It is recommended • Vaccination is
that priority be recommended for persons
given to health with comorbidities that have
workers at high risk been identified as
increasing the risk of severe
of exposure and COVID-19, including
older people, obesity, cardiovascular
including those disease, respiratory disease
aged 65 or older. and diabetes.
Who is the vaccine not
recommended for?
• People with a history of severe allergic
reaction to any component of the vaccine
should not take it.

• The vaccine is not recommended for

persons younger than 18 years of age
pending the results of further studies.
What’s the recommended dosage?
• The recommended dosage is two
doses given intramuscularly (0.5ml
each) with an interval of 8 to 12
weeks.

• Additional research is needed to

understand longer-term potential
protection after a single dose.
Efficacy of the Vaccine?
• The AZD1222 vaccine against COVID-
19 has an efficacy of 63.09% against
symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection.

• Longer dose intervals within the 8 to 12

weeks range are associated with
greater vaccine efficacy.
Is It Safe?
• Two versions of the vaccine – produced by AstraZeneca-SKBio (Republic
of Korea) and the Serum Institute of India – have been listed for
emergency use by WHO. When the vaccine underwent SAGE
consideration, it had undergone review by the European Medicines
Agency (EMA).

• The EMA has thoroughly assessed the data on the quality, safety and
efficacy of the vaccine and has recommended granting a conditional
marketing authorization for people aged 18 and above.
• The Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety, a group of experts
that provides independent and authoritative guidance to the WHO on the
topic of safe vaccine use, receives and assesses reports of suspected
safety events of potentially international impact.
What is the recommended dosage?

• SAGE recommends the use of Sinovac-CoronaVac vaccine as

2 doses (0.5 ml) given intramuscularly. WHO recommends an
interval of 2–4 weeks between the first and second dose. It is
recommended that all vaccinated individuals receive two
doses.

• If the second dose is administered less than 2 weeks after the

first, the dose does not need to be repeated. If administration
of the second dose is delayed beyond 4 weeks, it should be
given at the earliest possible opportunity.
