Rizal refused to follow the conditions set, and preferred

He volunteered his service as military doctor in Cuba, where revolution was

His four-year exile in Dapitan came to an end on July 31, 1896, and on the
same day,midnight, he boarded the streamer Espana with Josephine,
Narcissa, and Angelica, three nephews and three pupils.

The boat arrived in Manila Bay early morning of Thursday. He
found out that he had missed the boat Isla De Luzon bound for
Spain.

Finally, the time has arrived, prior to his departure. He wrote his
mother a letter informing her of his departure in Cuba and his concern
about their future about the outbreak of revolution.
Among the passenger in the ship were Don Pedro Roxas and his son.
They advised Rizal to stay in Singapore and take advantage of British
protection.
The trap
But Rizal refused them, as he said he ‘gave his word of honor’ to

Blanco was his implacable foe, who regard him as a dangerous Filipino
who was responsible in ranging Philippine Revolution and plotted his
doom.
The trap
Rizal heard of his impending arrest. He would be arrested by
Governor- General Blanco and would be sent to prison in Ceuta in the
Spanish Morocco.

The arrest
Rizal arrived in Barcelona as prisoner, being kept under
heavyguard for three days, and was transferred to the
custody of the Military Commander of Barcelona,
General Eulogio Despujol.
