a. demonstrate understanding of the lesson by using the


simple past tense and the past perfect tense correctly in
meaningful sentences,
b. differentiate past from past perfect tense, and
c. use the past and past perfect tenses correctly in varied
contexts.

Identifying Verbs
VERBS are easy to identify because they are
words that indicate action or a state of being,
like: write, run, tell, have, be, look, feel.
Verbs are the only part of speech that get
conjugated, that is, that changes tense in order
to indicate a particular time frame.

Tenses of the Verbs
Present I learn.
Past I learned.
Future I will learn. / I shall learn.
Present perfect I have learned.
Past perfect I had learned.
Future perfect I will have learned.
Present progressive I am learning.
Past progressive I was learning.
Future progressive I will be learning. /
I shall be learning.

Take note that verbs according to form


are divided into two which are:

a. Regular Verbs
b. Irregular Verbs

REGULAR VERBS
✘ Regular verbs form their past and past participle by
adding -d or -ed to the base form of the verb.
Examples: Past-Past Participle
walk- walked
dance- danced
study-studied
play-played
cook-cooked

IRREGULAR VERBS
✘ Irregular verbs form their past and past participle
in different ways.
Examples: Past-Past Participle
catch- caught- caught
speak-spoke-spoken
teach- taught-taught
hurt-hurt-hurt
sing- sang-sung

Simple past tense is used to express an action,
condition, or being that took place in the past.

The past perfect tense is used to tell an action that was
completed before another past action. It also tells an action
that happened in the distant past.

It is formed by adding the helping verb had to the
past participle of the verb.
