    Synopsis of the Course

    This subject addresses the essential concepts of


    chemical thermodynamics that are required by
    chemical engineers. Starting from fundamentals, it
    builds up to prediction of equilibrium states for
    vapour-liquid systems that exhibit non-ideal
    behaviour. Equation of state, thermodynamic
    property relations, the p-V-T behaviour of real
    fluids, equilibrium in chemical systems, phase
    rules, and determination of thermodynamics
    quantities.
    Course Outcomes
    CO1: Explain the basic terminology of thermodynamic, the
    application of the law of thermodynamic and the general
    concepts of equilibrium in chemical engineering problems
    CO2: Apply the equation of states in thermodynamics and
    determine the value of measured properties P, v and T
    using cubic equation of state, virial equation of state and
    generalized compressibility charts.
    CO3: Identify the fugacity and fugacity coefficient of gaseous
    species, activity and activity coefficient of liquid solution,
    and excess Gibbs energy using suitable models.
    CO4: Calculate the thermodynamics properties of binary and
    multicomponent mixtures related to chemical and phase
    equilibria.
    CO5: Determine the equilibrium composition, equilibrium
    constant, extent of reaction, and stoichiometric coefficient
    for chemical equilibrium in a single-phase with single-
    reaction system or multiple reaction system.
