THE FIRST BATTLE OF THE CIVIL WAR
• Date: April 12, 1861
• Summary: The battle of Fort Sumter started in 1861 and was the start of the Civil War.
This took place near Charleston, South Carolina.
• Confederate or Union: Confederate wins
• Leading Generals: P. G. T. Beauregard & Robert Anderson
• Fun Fact: Lincoln called for 75,000 to join the Civil War
BULL RUN-
FIRST MAJOR BATTLE
• Date: July 21, 1861
• Summary: The battle of Bull Run was on July 21 in Manassas Junction, Virginia. This
was only 25 miles from Washington D.C.
• Confederate or Union: Confederate wins
• Leading Generals: Irvin McDowell, Winfield Scoot, P. G. T. Beauregard, & Joseph E.
Johnston
• Fun Facts: Irvin McDowell’s troops were “raw recruits” and he wasn’t sure if they were
ready for war. People wanted to watch this battle take place in a grassy field nearby.
ANTIETAM-
BLOODIEST SINGLE DAY BATTLE OF THE CIVIL WAR

• Date: September 17, 1862


• Summary: On September 17, the most horrible battle would take place in Sharpsburg,
MD. Nearly 23,000 lives are lost.
• Confederate or Union: Draw
• Leading Generals: Robert E. Lee & George B. McClellan
• Fun Fact: Neither the North or the South had moved significantly from their original
positions at dawn.
EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION-
PRESIDENT LINCOLN FREES SLAVES IN REBELLING STATES

• Date: January 1, 1863


• Summary: On January 1, the United States had three years of the Civil War and Lincoln
issued the Emancipation Proclamation stating that all slaves within the opposing states
will be free.
• President: Abraham Lincoln
• Fun Fact: This document was sign by Abraham on September 22, 1862 but presented to
the public on January 1, 1863.
VICKSBURG-
UNION TAKES CONTROL OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER AND SPLITS THE
CONFEDERACY IN TWO

• Date: May 18, 1863


• Summary: On May 18, the union and the confederates budded heads for control of the
Mississippi. This happened in Warren Country, MS.
• Confederate or Union: Union
• Leading Generals: Ulysses S. Grant & John C. Pemberton
• Fun Facts: People in the nearby town were forced to live in caves during the war. They
were short on food supplies.
APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE-
GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE SURRENDERS TO GENERAL GRANT. 

• Date: April 9, 1865


• Summary: On April 9, Lee surrenders the confederates and Grant lets them go freely the
union has won!
• Confederate or Union: Union
• Leading Generals: Robert E. Lee & Ulysses S. Grant
• Fun Fact: Nearly 164 were killed or wounded before Lee would surrender.
