    Life History
    • Achyut Purushottam Kanvinde was an Indian architect who
    worked in functionalist approaches with elements of  Brutalist
    architecture.

    • He was born in Achare, in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, in


    1916 in a large family.

    • Kanvinde was also influenced by his father who was portrait and
    landscape painter.

    • Kanvinde graduated architecture from the “J.J. School of Arts”,


    Mumbai, in 1942.

    • Then sent by the government of India to study at “Harvard


    University”. There he worked under Walter Gropous and was
    influenced by his thinking and teaching.
    Lifetime Achivements
    • Awarded Padma Shree in 1976.

    • President IIA (1974-1975).

    • Co-Authored book “Campus Design in India”.

    • IIA’s Babu Rao Mathre Gold Medal for lifetime achivement in 1985.

    • Great Masters Award from JK Industries Ltd. in 1993.

    • Outstanding Konkan Award 2003.


    Philosophy
    • Kanvinde played with space and forms. A famous example is the
    ISKCON Temple at New Delhi.

    • He gave great importance to natural light. The form of the building is


    such that the problem of ventilation as well as excessive heat is
    beautifully solved.

    • He championed the cause of vernacular architecture. He believed that


    values and historical influences contributed
    towards good architecture.
    DESIGN PHILOSPY
    • FUNCTIONALIST STYLE OF DESIGN :-
    Functionalism was an approach to design as per the concept that the space and
    form of a building should emerge out of the logical arrangement of space inside and not
    from any predetermined idea like symmetry. functionalist believed a building should
    only have features that were functionally necessary and no non-functional decoration.
    they lead to humane space that is space where you felt welcome and comfortable. they
    Used latest technology and industrial materials like door and windows and RCC.

    • LOGIC OF LIGHTNESS :-
    The complete focus on the materials to be used in construction
    kanvinde always try to develop such an athestic for a heavy
    mass construction that looks light.

    • It is built in 1998 and it is located in New Delhi.

    • The project is situated on a sloping site and covers an area of 3 acres

    with the slope of 8meters in relation to road level.

    • The imposing architecture of the ISKCON Temple dominates the


    skyline of the southern part of New Delhi. 

    • It has assembly hall for 400 people.

    • The building was constructed of reinforced concrete frame structure


    and clad with red and white stone finish.

    • Deity spaces are located at the highest level.

    • It is established in 1959-1966 and is located on the outskirts of the
    city of Kanpur in U.P.

    • It is the first  Indian Institutes of Technology, the institute was created

    with the assistance of a consortium of nine US research universities


    as
    part of the Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP).

    • The building is harmonious in character.

    • The site is flat with the canal on one side and transportation route on
    the other side.

    • The Academic Complex is located centrally at the site and free from
    traffic noise.

    • The plan anticipated the capacity of 5000 students.

    • To balance the horizontality of building, vertical columns were added

    in the front facade.

    • The site being longitudinal in shape, two academic zones have been
    located mid-way between the two residential zones in order to reduce
    walking distance.

    • Heavy engineering laboratories are placed on the ground floor, light


    laboratories on the first floor.

    • It is well connected to the major city centers by open and wide roads.

    • It was constructed around 1994.

    • The site is contoured.

    • It is a reinforced concrete framed structure.

    • This building has two block. The one block for administration, it
    known as Dhuruvshila. And the other block have dinning hall, V.I.P.
    lounge at ground floor and library at the first floor, this building is
    known as Karmshila.

    • The coffer slab is used in this building.

    • In this building the Ar. A.P. Kanvinde used the different styles of the
    windows.
