Local and Global Communication
in Multicultural Setting
A. WORLD OF DIVERSITY
Parapak (2015) describes our world as a world of diversity. For centuries, the people of
the world were separated by mountains and seas. They rarely saw each other; their lives
were practically unrelated.
The world, although one world, was and is inhabited by diverse populations, each with
their own identity, physical, spiritual and cultural uniqueness.
In some ways technology has united the world and mankind, but technology has not
eliminated our diversity.
The same may be said about communicating locally - meaning here in the Philippines,
and communicating with other Filipinos. Like the globe, ours is a diverse country, but
global communications have made our country a small city of intelligence.
B. THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY
Cultural sensitivity is being aware that cultural differences and similarities between
people exist witjout assigning them a value - postive or negative, better or worse,
right or wrong.
A gesture that is acceptable in one culture might be meaningless or offensive in
another.
C. CULTURAL AWARENESS AND
SENSITIVITY
D. GENDER SENSITIVITY
Gender semsitivity refers to the aim of understanding and taking account of the soceital and cultural
factors involved in gender-based exclusion and discrimination in the most diverse spheres of public and
private life.
Gender-sensitive language is the realization of gender equality in written and spoken language.
Avoiding sex and gender-based discrimination starts with language, as the systematic use of gender-
biased terminology influences attitudes and expectations and could, in the mind of the reader or listener,
relegate women to the background or help perpetuate a stereotyped view of women's and men's roles.
Another thing which you must avoid is stereotyping roles and attributes . Stereotypibg roles mean when
certain jobs are presumed to be performed only by men or women, giving rise to gender-biased terms.
Gender sensitive language is not simply terminology and rules which should be carried by a gender-
sensitive speaker or writer.
E. POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
The term political correctness is used to describe language, policies, or measures
that are intended to avoid offense or disadvantages to members of particular
groups in soceity.
Merriam-Webater defines politically correct as agreeing with the idea that people
should be careful to not use language or behave in a way that could offend a
particular grouo of people.
Other dictionaries give similar definitions, but what it basically comes down to is
politicak correctness means not being a jerk to others. Political correctness is
nothing more than treating others with respect.
