Understanding Magnetic Fields

Magnets have a magnetic field that is strongest at their poles and weaker further away. The shape of a magnetic field can be shown through field lines that run from the North pole to the South pole. Magnets can pull through some substances like metals but not others like gases or liquids depending on whether the substance is magnetic or not. The Earth itself acts like a large bar magnet with a magnetic field centered at its core.
