He translated Schiller's "Wilhelm Tell" and 5 fairy tales by Andersen including "Thumbelina", "The Ugly Duckling", "The Fir Tree", "The Angel", and "The Little Match Girl". The translations were intended for his nephews and to share German culture with Filipinos. They were some of the first secular works translated directly into Tagalog.

There are some good and good German customs, such as

Life is a serious matter and only the intellect and heart pass it by.

To live is to be with humanity and to be with humanity is to suffer.


But this misery is not just a cruel and material struggle to the
people; it is a struggle for them and for themselves, their passions
and self, with mistakes and anxiety. It is an eternal torment with a
smile on the lips and tears in the heart.

Andersen's five talents were interpreted from
German, a language he learned. In translating these
stories into Tagalog, Rizal not only passes them on to
his nephews, but also promotes a way of life he has
adapted overseas and brought it to the Philippines.

No one knows exactly why Rizal chose these stories


to translate. However, Ocampo notices that the main
character is individuals who will eventually change
and shape. He believes that Rizal not only educates
his nephews, but also the country.
