Objectives
A.Discuss the Renaissance art and its famous artists
B.Appreciate Renaissance art by actively participating
during discussion; and
C.Illustrate any art of the Renaissance by drawing,
painting, sketching.
Renaissance Art (1400-1600)
 Movement that originated in Italy in the 15th century
 It was the period of economic progress that stirred enthusiasm
for the study of ancient philosophy and artistic values.
 Renaissance came from the word “renaitre” means “rebirth”
of Greek and Roman culture
-Architecture
-Sculpture
-Painting
-Literature
 Renaissance was an era of great artistic and intellectual
achievement with the birth of secular art
 Focus was on realistic and humanistic art
 It is characterized by accurate anatomy, scientific perspective,

and deeper landscapes.


 Patrons(‘mecenas”) financed and protected the artists. They
commissioned artwork and decided the themes.
-Kings and Popes
-Medici family (wealthy patron of renaissance in Italy)
Characteristics of Renaissance Art
 Classicism – proportion, symmetry, balance, simplicity
 Emphasis on human figure – rediscovered the beauty of nature and the
human body
 Realism – paint and sculpt subject realistically
 Perspective – linear perspective gives the illusion that some objects in
the painting are further away than others
 Light and Shade – used to add perspective and make it more realistic;
depict emotions
• Chiaroscuro- technique that used dark and light colors to create the illusion
of depth
• Sfumato- a technique of blurring or softening sharp outlines
Famous composers of the Renaissance

1. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)


 known as the “Renaissance man”
 painter, sculptor, writer, inventor, scientist, architect, engineer
 developed the technique “sfumato”
 techniquesincluded layering of paints, precise attention to light,
shadow, and human form, and a detailed eye for expression and
gesture
 Some of his renowned works include Mona Lisa, The Last Supper,
The Vitruvian Man
2. Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564)
 more known as Michelangelo
 represented the body in three dimensions of sculpture
 artist, sculptor, poet, architect and engineer
 commissioned by popes for his artwork and talent
 Some of his famous works include Sistine Chapel (Last
Judgement; Creation of man), Pieta, David, Dome of St. Peter in
Vatican
3. Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520)
One of the most greatest artist in the Renaissance era
Lived only a short life
produced a huge number of works including paintings,
frescoes, prints, such as the Sistine Madonna, School of
Athens, Transfiguration, Saint George and the Dragon
best known for charming paintings of angels and
Madonnas.

4. Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, or Donatello (1386-1466)
a sculptor who modified the proportions of the statue,
making the head and shoulders larger to compensate
for its final elevated position
