RECOLLECTION:
EDIFICATION OF
THE FAITHFUL
Edify / Edification
• A process of building up
• To give importance: to highlight
• To make firm
Edify / Edification
It is to be hoped that pastors of souls,
musicians and the faithful will gladly
accept these norms and put them into
practice, uniting their efforts to attain the
true purpose of sacred music, “which is the
glory of God and the sanctification of the
faithful.”
(MS 4, 1967: SC 112, 1963)
Edify / Edification
Sacred music, being a complementary
part of the solemn liturgy,
participates in the general scope of
the liturgy, which is the glory of God
and the sanctification and edification
of the faithful.
(TLS 1, 1903)
Edify / Edification
Sacred Music should edify the
faithful. How?

God and humanity

• We value talents, but also know
how to listen and obey
• We are diverse yet made one by our
musical service
Edify / Edification
If we do not strive to be edified
ourselves by Sacred Music, rather than
building up the people, we run the risk
of pulling them down.
Edify / Edification
Let us strive for holiness, beauty and
universality in our service for the Lord.
Let us be edified by our service. Only
then can we truly edify the People of
God, bringing them closer to their
sanctity, magnifying the glory of God.
