Edification of The Faithful: Recollection

Sacred music should edify the faithful by glorifying God and sanctifying people. It can edify through exhibiting holiness by using sacred texts, revealing God's acts, and being sung prayer. It can edify through beauty by being a product of faith and skill, being prayerful song rather than performance. It can edify through universality by reflecting universal truths of God and humanity, admitting cultural genius while valuing liturgical norms, and promoting unity in diversity. Those involved in sacred music must strive to be edified themselves to truly build up the people rather than risk pulling them down.

RECOLLECTION:

EDIFICATION OF
THE FAITHFUL
Edify / Edification

• A process of building up

• To give importance: to highlight

• To make firm
Edify / Edification

It is to be hoped that pastors of souls,

musicians and the faithful will gladly
accept these norms and put them into
practice, uniting their efforts to attain the
true purpose of sacred music, “which is the
glory of God and the sanctification of the
faithful.”
(MS 4, 1967: SC 112, 1963)
Edify / Edification

Sacred music, being a complementary

part of the solemn liturgy,
participates in the general scope of
the liturgy, which is the glory of God
and the sanctification and edification
of the faithful.
(TLS 1, 1903)
Edify / Edification

Sacred Music should edify the

faithful. How?
Qualities

1. Holiness
2. Beauty
3. Universality

Sacred Music is sacred!

• The text is usually taken from
Sacred Scriptures and the
liturgical celebration
• It reveals the mighty acts of God
• “Sung prayer” – prayer inspiring
music

Sacred Music is sacred!

• The need for deepening prayer life
and love of the Sacred Scriptures
• Appreciation of God’s mighty work
in our lives
• We sing because we pray
Qualities: Beauty

Sacred Music is beautiful!

• It is a product of faith and skill
• Beautiful does not mean
complicated. It depends on the
musical form/style used in relation
to the text/liturgical action
• “Prayed song” – song becoming
prayer
Qualities: Beauty

Sacred Music is beautiful!

• We need to regularly hone our
musical skills
• The repertoire is “singing the
Liturgy”, not a “performance”
• We pray because we sing
beautifully
Qualities: Universal

Sacred Music is universal!

• It reflects the universal truths of
God and humanity
• It admits the genius of respective
cultures, but value general
liturgical nomrs
• It promotes “unity in diversity”
Qualities: Universal

Sacred Music is universal!

• We are in constant search for truth
• We value talents, but also know
how to listen and obey
• We are diverse yet made one by our
musical service
Edify / Edification

If we do not strive to be edified

ourselves by Sacred Music, rather than
building up the people, we run the risk
of pulling them down.
Edify / Edification

Let us strive for holiness, beauty and

universality in our service for the Lord.
Let us be edified by our service. Only
then can we truly edify the People of
God, bringing them closer to their
sanctity, magnifying the glory of God.
