IS ABOUT
• It intends to facilitate the exploration
of issues and concerns regarding Self
and Identity.

understanding of one’s self and that of

personal with the academic

everyday experiences of students

A. Understanding
the Self Construct
• This looks into the construction of
Self by various social sciences:
Philosophy, Sociology,
Anthropology, Political Science and
Psychology; also Western and
Eastern perspectives
• These seek to answer the question – What is the
Self? Is there even such a construct as the Self?
B. Unpacking the Self
The Physical Self / Sexual self/
The Biological Self
The Relational Self
The Material/Economic Self
The Political Self
The Spiritual Self
The Digital Self
The Environmental Self
C. Managing and
Caring for the Self

Three areas of concern for


students:
1. Learning

3. Managing Stress
Managing Stress
•This enables the understanding
of the theoretical underpinnings
of stress, self care and
compassion

•It provides for and hones new


skills and learnings for better
management of the self
WHAT THE COURSE IS
•Interdisciplinary – course is
designed to present different
perspectives regarding the
topic
•Integrative – seeks to tie up
different perspectives and
views regarding the topic
• Interactive- more interactions between
teacher and students, among students and
between students and others
What Course is about
•Experiential - (not at the
expense of theory). It
provides the students
practice in what is learned in
the classroom by enabling
varied experiences.
• Students are encouraged to reflect on and
learn from their experiences in the
classroom and outside of it.
SPECIFICS OF
COURSE
• It is intended for 3 hours a week
for 18 class weeks or 54 hours a
semester
• The course will include not only actual lectures
but will feature class and group discussions,
group/class activities such as quikkie surveys and
interviews, short videos (YouTube, Ted Talks),
short film clips and illustrative songs
Class Activities
• The activities may be done PRIOR
to lecture to elicit personal
experiences which are used to
illustrate or contextualize the
lectures;
• DURING the lecture to illustrate a
theory/concept discussed or
• AT THE END to wrap up the topic
and tie the theory and
experiences together
The Quickie Survey

• Students are given a chance to


actively participate in data
gathering and then pool together
the data gathered – “pulse of the
public”
• This will enable the students to compare their own
responses against those of others; to compare
research data with local data
Other activities
•Answering psychological
tests(downloaded or hard
copies provided)
•Writing short reflection
papers
•Using videos for illustration
(YouTube. Ted Talks)
• Recommending films/movies/TV shows
Keeping a
Journal/Journaling
•Already a familiar activity to
those keeping diaries or blogs)
•Is regarded as a bonus activity
•May or may not be
submitted/graded
• May be submitted to and commented on by
teacher
• May be regarded as a self assessment tool, “a
personal development exercise”
Benefits of Journaling
• Helps develop critical thinking
(responding to class discussion,
lecture)
• Promotes self reflection and insight
• Enables the reduction of stress
• Helps clarify thoughts and feelings
• Helps solve problems by accessing right brain
• Promotes physical and emotional health
• Enables a better understanding of the self
How is this done?
•Teacher provides prompts for
the entry taking off from the
day’s topic – ex. The biggest
influences on my life have
been.....
•Students may be encouraged to write an entry
after every class or topic
•Entries may be in any form students feel most
appropriate – essay, stream of consciousness,
poem , etc.
RECOMMENDED
ASSESSMENT
•Two long examinations
•Class attendance
•Participation in class activities
(recitations, engagement in
discussions, surveys etc)
either by teacher, by group
• Class demeanor/behavior – attentiveness,
readiness to recite/share
