The Anglo-Saxon

and The Medieval

Period:
Introduction.
In this work we will be able to see and understand about the “anglo-
Saxon” and “medieval” periods, in addition to their characteristlcs,
significant works and great authors of such periods.
The Anglo-Saxon Period (450-1066):

 The Old English Period or The Anglo-Saxon Period refers to the

literature produced from the invasion of Celtic England by
Germanic tribes in the first half of the fifth century to the conquest of
England in 1066 by William the Conqueror.
 During the Old English Period, written literature began to develop
from oral tradition, and in the eighth century poetry written in the
vernacular Anglo-Saxon (also known as Old English) appeared. One
of the most well-known eighth century Old English pieces of
literature is Beowulf ,a great Germanic epic poem. Two poets of the
Old English Period who wrote on biblical and religious themes were
Caedmon and Cynewulf.

Caedmon. Cynewulf.
Beowulf, the earliest literature, the national epic of the Anglo-Saxon, one of the
striking features – the use of the alliteration.
Alliteration:

 In alliterative verse, certain accented words in a line begin with the

same consonant sound.
 Examples:
 “She sells seashells by the sea-shore.”
 “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.”
Epic:
 A long narrative poem in elevated style presenting characters of
high position in a series of adventures which form an organic whole:
Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey:
The Medieval Period (1066---15th
century)
 Social background: The norman conquest under William, Duke of
Normandy, the battle of Hastings in 1066; the mark of establishment
of feudalism.
Literature

 Langland; English Ballad; Romance; Chaucer.

 Langland: ‘’Piers the Plowman’’ and allegory.
Allegory:

 As a literary device, an allegory is a metaphor in which a character,

place or event is used to deliver a broader message about real-
world issues and occurrences. Allegory (in the sense of the practice
and use of allegorical devices and works) has occurred widely
throughout history in all forms of art, largely because it can readily
illustrate or convey complex ideas and concepts in ways that are
comprehensible or striking to its viewers, readers, or listeners.

Four types of interpretation
.( Allegory)
 The first is simply the literal interpretation of the events of the story for
historical purposes with no underlying meaning.
 The second is called typological: it connects the events of the Old
Testament with the New Testament; in particular drawing allegorical
connections between the events of Christ's life with the stories of the
Old Testament.
 The third is moral (or tropological), which is how one should act in
the present, the "moral of the story".
 The fourth type of interpretation is anagogical, dealing with the
future events of Christian history, heaven, hell, the last judgment; it
deals with prophecies.
Ballad:

 The most important department of English folk literature; a story told

in song, usually in 4-line stanzas, with the second and fourth lines
rhymed. Of paramoount importance are the ballads of Robin Hood.
Romance:
 As a literary genre of high culture, romance or chivalric romance is a
type of prose and verse narrative that was popular in the
aristocratic circles of High Medieval and Early Modern Europe. They
were fantastic stories about marvel-filled adventures, often of
a chivalric knight-errant portrayed as having heroic qualities, who
goes on a quest. It developed further from the epics as time went
on; in particular, "the emphasis on love and courtly manners
distinguishes it from the chanson de geste and other kinds of epic, in
which masculine military heroism predominates.
The Canterbury Tales:

 A picture of the 14th century England; beggining with a general

prologue; with the influence of Bocaccio’s ‘’Decameron’’.
 Geoffrey Chaucer.
