 The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation
(SAARC) is an economic and political organization.
 SAARC was founded in Dhaka on 8 December 1985.
 SAARC maintains permanent diplomatic relations at
the United Nations as an observer and has developed
links with multilateral entities, including the
European Union
 Covering a population of more than 2 billion, SAARC
is the largest regional organization in the world.
 ZAI UR RAHMAN was the man behind the idea of
SAARC formation.
 Its secretariat is based in Kathmandu, Nepal.
 The organization promotes development of economic
and regional integration.
 It launched the South Asian Free Trade Area in 2006.
 In April 2007, at the association’s 14th summit
Afghanistan became its eighth member.
 SAARC Countries consists of 3% of the world area
and 21% of population.

 First summit was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 6-8
December, 1985.
 First Secretary General of SAARC nation was made in
the 2nd summit who was Dr. Abul Ahsan from
Bangladesh.
 Total 3 summits are held in New Delhi, India.
 The 19th summit was going to be held in Pakistan on
16th November, 2016 but was cancelled due to Uri
attach.
 India tries to dominate the functions of SAARC.
 Large variety of different political system.
 Large variety of regional and cultural differences.
 They lack financial resources and advance
technologies.
 Involvement of external factors.
 Bilateral disputes.
