About this book
An old fisherman named Santiago had a bad luck streak of 84 days
without catching a fish. Everyone said he was unlucky and they started
refusing to fish with him. One person remained loyal to him, Manolin,
even though he too was forbidden to fish with him by his parents.
On the eighty-fifth day, he decided to go fishing in the deep sea,
where fishermen had never been before, to prove his ability and courage.
At sea, the old man found a big marlin. He overcame many difficulties
and struggled hard. Finally, on the third morning, he stabbed the
harpoon into the heart of the marlin fish. On his way back, the old man
encountered five shark attacks, and he fought back bravely with
harpoons, oars and knives. The book ends with what happened after he
docked back at the port.

I recommend this book because:
This novel expresses the perspective of life as a struggle. The
fisherman, though old, unlucky and unsuccessful, still perseveres
in his efforts and can win because of his own nature. Even in the
face of unconquerable nature, man can still win spiritual victory.
Perhaps the result is failure, but in the course of struggle, we
can see how ordinary men become great men.

This book is very real, unlike other stories about inspiration,


unlike other stereotypes (first suffering from difficulties, then
working hard, and finally succeeding). It helped me understand
that in ordinary life, before every choice, there are infinite
possibilities.
