Breast Anatomy and Quadrant Overview

The breast is composed of mammary glands surrounded by fatty tissue located in the subcutaneous tissue over the pectoral muscles. The breast is divisible into four quadrants, extending from the sternum to the midaxillary line and from the second to sixth ribs. The nipple is usually located at the fourth intercostal space and surrounded by the areola. Blood supply comes from the internal thoracic, lateral thoracic, and thoracoacromial arteries, while lymphatic drainage flows to the axillary lymph nodes from the lateral quadrants and parasternal nodes from the medial quadrants.
