INTRODUCTION
High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Technology has
characteristics which makes it especially attractive for
certain transmission applications.
HVDC transmission is widely recognized as being
advantageous for long distance, bulk power delivery,
asynchronous interconnections and long submarine cable
crossings.
The number of HVDC projects committed or under
consideration globally has increased in recent years
reflecting a renewed interest in this mature technology.
VSC-HVDC is new power technology transmission
based on voltage sourced converters and Self- turn off
devices.
Not from the economics but also from technology, VSCHVDC provides a new choice for grid inter-connection,
city centre in feed and offshore installation.
The DC line faults will induce a significant influence on
operation of VSC-HVDC, therefore the faults analysis is
necessary for reasonable protection design.
NECESSITY
The common faults types for DC transmission line -to
ground fault and line- to- line fault, because faults of cables
are usually caused by external mechanical stress.
Therefore, the faults are generally permanent, for which a
lengthy repair is need.
The converters should be stopped immediately while a
cable faults is detected. But for overhead line, the faults are
always caused by lightning strikes and pollution.
The faults the line are likely to be temporary, which
demands a faults restoration after the faults clearance.
So, focus on the fault analysis of DC line and demonstrates
the demand and solution of VSC-HVDC system restoration
after DC temporary faults for overhead line.
OBJECTIVE
Analyzes the mechanism of DC line- to ground faults
and DC line-to-line faults in HVDC transmission lines
by using VSC_HVDC scheme, and then propose the
recovery demand of temporary faults at overhead line
scheme.
According to the characteristics under simulation, the
solution of recovery process is proposed
THEME
In this project, focus on the faults analysis of DC line
and demonstrates the demand and solution of VSCHVDC system restoration after DC temporary faults
for overhead HVDC transmission line.
As the DC line fault will induce a significant influence
on operation of HVDC, therefore the fault
characteristics is necessary for reasonable protection
design. Especially for overhead line, the problem in
recovery process should be taken into account to
ensure that the system can restore rapidly under
temporary fault condition.
This work demonstrates the DC line fault
characteristics and its recovery process, in order to
provide a reference for project design.
PROPOSED WORK
PSCAD / EMTDC simulation software is used to
simulate the VSC based HVDC system. PSCAD allows to
assemble the circuit, run the simulation, analyze the
results, and manage the data in a completely integrated
graphical environment.
The performance under DC transmission line
transients investigated under power system software tool
PSCAD. The simulation of circuit by using PSCAD and
analysis show out the characteristics of DC line-to-ground
and the line-to-line fault in HVDC system, and then
proposes the recovery demand of temporary faults at
overhead line scheme.
