The Batak of Palawan
Let us explore a little more about our localized indigenous social ideas. In the City of
Puerto Princesa, there is an indigenous group located in Barangays Maoyon, Tanabag,
Concepcion, and Langogan. This indigenous group of people has distinct characteristics
and practices that play a significant role in national development. This indigenous group is
called “Batak.” They have a short stature, dark skin, curly hair and are considered to be of
the Negrito stock because of their physical attributes. They stayed from one place to
another. One of the most threatened indigenous communities of South East Asia inhabits
the mountains and river valleys of central Palawan.
Amongst existing Batak settlements, the Batak community of Tanabag is the best
standing concerning the five essential elements of an effective Indigenous Community
Conserved Area: a) the integrity and strength of the custodian community; b) the
connection between the community and its territory; c) the functioning of the governance
institution; d) the territory’s conservation status; and e) the livelihoods and well-being of
the community. Out of the analysis of the practices of Batak, these are their social ideas
that you will be able to extract.
