Multimedia
Multimedia is defined as the computer-controlled
integration of multiple forms of media that include text,
graphics, audio, video, etc. The primary characteristics of
a multimedia system is the use of more than one kind of
medium to deliver content and functionality. Its evolution
comes along with the development of computers. From
the simple computational tasks of the computer, it has
also offered the field of incorporating different media
elements into one. Today, web and desktop computing
programs can both involve multimedia components.

the characteristics of the environment
wherein you are connected-the internet.
According to Living Internet, a key attribute
of the internet is being connected; it means
that you can communicate with all that it
offers. All of the internet’s technologies–web,
newsgroups, email, mailing lists, IRC, MUDs–

Ease of use
The web can be immediately used by anyone
already familiar with a computer window. The
only special features are links, which are as
natural and intuitive to use as pressing a
button.

Universal access
The open design of the web makes it easy to
build web browsers for a wide range of
devices. Web browsers have been deployed on
cell phones and personal organizers, and the
web is now the standard interface for
providing access to information.

Search capabilities
The development of search sites greatly
multiplied the power and usefulness of the web
by providing the capability to effectively
search the content of millions of web pages in
seconds.

MULTIMEDIA
IN ACTION
ANALOG MEDIA Analog media save sounds, pictures,
and texts in non electronic forms. This
includes the traditional types of media,
like cassette tapes, records, and
videocassettes, that use waves to
transmit information. Analog
equipment is generally more
specialized than digital. Analog
devices rely on tape recorders, video
cameras, and older playback
equipment to edit their contents.
DIGITAL MEDIA Digital media, on the other hand,
transmit the information recorded in
the wave into a more flexible format,
namely, digitized code that can be
transferred across a variety of devices,
like computers, internet systems,
digital cameras, and more. Scanners,
sound cards, and video compression
are all used to record these types of
media.
Uses of Multimedia
Multimedia devices have an almost
innumerous variety of applications.
They are used in home
entertainment systems and used
as educational tools aside from its
primary purpose-data processing
and storage.
Edutainment
Educators, for example, have been combining some
of the exciting elements of video game applications
with select features Bibof educational material. The
concept of "edutainment" was created by merging
the concept of education with entertainment. The
goal of using the multimedia edutainment
approach is to entertain the user while being
unaware that he or she is actually learning in the 3
process.
Business
Communication
Multimedia also offers critical services in the
business world. The quality of business
communication is enhanced by multimedia.
Product promotion, customer information,
communication to employees can be done with
multimedia. Multimedia multiplies the degree of
effectiveness in promoting a product or service at
the same time adds a hint of entertainment. 3
Entertainment
Multimedia also brought advances in the field of
entertainment. Multimedia developers use sound,
animation, and graphics of multimedia to create
games that can be realistic in setting and engaging
for the audience. Flight simulator creates real-life
imaging. Children can drive cars, play musical
instruments, fly aircraft, and play golf by
multimedia. 3
Public Access of
Information
The availability of multimedia applications allowed
public access to information either online or offline.
Tourist information system, hospital information
system, navigational system, and electronic
publishing are some examples of uses of
multimedia for information dissemination.

TYPES OF
MULTIMEDIA
Linear multimedia
It presents information and active
content without any navigation
control for the viewer. The users sit
back and watch the presentation. The
presentation normally plays from the
start to end or even loops continually
to present the information.
Nonlinear multimedia
It presents information requiring user
interactivity to control progress as
used with a computer game or used
in self-paced computer-based
training. Nonlinear content is also
known as hypermedia content.
Online multimedia
It is used in applications available with
internet connectivity. Depending on
the type of content, it can be linear or
non-linear, and users need an internet
connection to access the material.
Offline multimedia
Offline multimedia is content that is
stored on a physical medium (such as
a CD, DVD, or USB) and accessed
without the need for an internet
connection.
Hybrid multimedia
Hybrid multimedia combines both
online and offline elements. Users can
access some parts of the content
offline, while other parts require an
internet connection.
