MEANS OF COMMUNICATION

A medium of communication is an instrument or form of

content through which the communication process is carried out. It is usually employed in the
term used to refer to mass media, however,
Other means of communication, such as the telephone, are not mass but interpersonal.
Since the media was born and developed, it has become a
great source of power and social influence worldwide.
Mass media are instruments in
permanent evolution as, over the years, its way of transmitting information
has become quite massive and instantaneous. Most likely, the first form of
communicating among humans was through the signs and signals used in prehistory,
whose reflection in material culture are the different manifestations of prehistoric art.
The emergence of writing is regarded as a milestone marking the beginning of history. From that point on,
moment, the economic and social changes were driving the birth and
development of different means of communication, from those linked to writing and its
mechanization (printing - 15th century -) to the audiovisual media linked to the era of
electricity (first half of the 20th century) and the revolution of computing and the
telecommunications (scientific-technical revolution or third industrial revolution -since
the second half of the 20th century–), each of them essential for the different phases
of the so-called globalization process.

Ends and characteristics

The main purpose of the media is,

precisely, communicate objectively, but depending on their type of ideology they can
specializing in: informing, educating, transmitting, entertaining, forming opinion, teaching
control, etc.

Positive. The positive characteristics of the media

of communication lies in that they enable a wide range of informational content
they reach extensive places on the planet immediately, such as
news, technological advances, scientific discoveries, etc. In this way more
people have immediate access to this type of information. The
media also make it possible for many relationships
personalities remain united or, at least, do not completely disappear
measure that facilitates thecommunicationin real time. Another positive factor occurs in the
economic sphere: whoever holds the means can generate a certain
type of awareness about a kind of product, that is, it can generate its
own demand, since the media often serve the function of
opinion makers. So, seen from the business perspective, it is an aspect
widely positive in making marketing and advertising possible for the world.
Negative. Negative characteristics fall on the
manipulation of information and its use for one's own interests of a
specific group. In many cases, it tends to form stereotypes, followed by
many people thanks to the reach that the message acquires in its dissemination (such as
It happens when generalizing people or groups). Another negative aspect of the media
mass communication lies in that thecensorshipit is not absolute, therefore
minors can have access to explicit content such as is the case of
thetelevisionor theinternet.

Due to the complexity of the media

communicationHarry Pross(1972) has separated these into three categories, based on their
theory.
