Signals and Systems

Quiz #2
1- hour closed book exam, June 3, 2020.
(An A4-sized handwriting note is allowed. Total score: 120)

1. Consider a LTI system having the following input CT periodic square wave 𝐱(𝐭)
shown below.

30 %

(a) (10%) Find the FT representation of x(t) using either analytical or graphical
method. (Note: NOT (CT)FS representation)
𝒔𝒊𝒏(𝝅𝒕)
(b) (10%) Given 𝒉(𝒕) = 𝝅𝒕 , determine OR sketch the FT of y(t).
(c) (10%) Same as (b). Determine y(t)

(不需要作圖, 第一小題如果只有作圖也給分)

2. Modulation theory. Consider the following system where the FT 𝑋(𝑗𝜔)

of the input signal x(t) is depicted on the right. Let z(t)  Z(j𝜔) and y(t)
 Y(j𝜔). Sketch Z(j𝜔) and Y(j𝜔) for the following two cases.
(只要作圖, 不須推導, 如果沒作圖給半分)
20 %

sin⁡(8𝜋𝑡)
(a) (10%) 𝑤(𝑡) = cos⁡(5𝜋𝑡) and h(t) =
𝜋𝑡
sin⁡(8𝜋𝑡)
(b) (10%) 𝑤(𝑡) = cos⁡(8𝜋𝑡) and h(t) =
𝜋𝑡

3. Derivation of sampling theory. (前兩個小題需要有過程, (b) 小題可以用作圖法推

導, (c)(d) 小題需畫在所指定的頻率範圍內)
(a) (15%) To begin this, we need to know the FT representation of an impulse train.
Given a CT impulse train 𝑝(𝑡) = ∑∞ 𝑛=−∞ 𝛿(𝑡 − 𝑛𝑇𝑠 ) where 𝑇𝑠 is the sampling
interval, derive its FT representation 𝑃(𝑗𝜔).

(b) (15%) Derive the sampling theory using impulse train concept. Assume a CT
signal 𝑥𝑎⁡ (𝑡)⁡𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ⁡𝑎⁡𝐹𝑇⁡𝑜𝑓⁡𝑋𝑎 (𝑗𝜔) is sampled every 𝑇𝑠 time interval, what is the
50 % FT representation of this sampled DT signal? You can use either analytical
method or graphical method. For graphical method, please specify enough details
(such as the frequency/magnitude axis).

(c) (10%) Assuming a CT signal with FT 𝑋𝑎 (𝑗𝜔) shown below, sketch the FT of
1
the sampled signals when 𝑇𝑠 = 14 within ω = -40π~ 40π. (hint: both
frequency/magnitude axis should be specified)

1
(d) (10%) Same as (c). Sketch the FT of the sampled signals when 𝑇𝑠 = 7 within ω =
-30π~ 30π.

4. Decimation theory (i.e., Downsampling). ((a) 小題不須作圖,只要算出值給分 (b)

必須作圖)
(a) (10%) Determine the maximum decimation rate q by which a DT signal with
DTFT 𝑋(𝑒 𝑗𝛺 ) (shown below) can be decimated without aliasing.

20 %

(b) (10%) Same as (a). Sketch the resulting DTFT after q-fold decimation.

(a)
According to the classnote (shown below), in the DTFT domain, unsampling by q results in
spectral broadening by q and the magnitude decreases by q, too.

Therefore, to avoid aliasing, the maximum decimation ratio meets the following inequation.

2π>= 2q(π/3)(Equality is allowed in this case because the maximum frequency at

π/3 has zero magnitude). q<= 3  The maximum decimation ratio is 3.
