Extracurricular activities are defined as programs outside of the regular

school curriculum. They focus on a specific activity, goal, or purpose. When


choosing on extracurricular activity to participate in, it’s important to consider
depth over breath commit to activities that you are passionate about and
interested in rather than being a part of any and every club. Your personal
interest and abilities should also be considered and it’s important to seek a
balance too many extracurricular may lead to rapid burnout.

Extracurricular activities form a important part of a student’s life. Basically


beyond the regular duties, schedule etc. They are to be performed by students
and exist at all levels of education starting from grade 1 st, junior high school,
college to university education and much more. These activities are mostly
voluntary and are unlike the mandatory tasks. ( Prograti, 2023 ).

Extracurricular activity serves as an extension of the academic curriculum. It


helps students show off their interest and personalities. These activities also
demonstrate their ability to contribute, stick to their commitment, and manage
their time and priorities. ( ASVAB, 2023 ).

It is important to choose a school club or activity that you’ll love.


Extracurricular activities include student participation in clubs, student
government groups, sports team and even through volunteer work at your
school or in your local community and part-time work. ( Newnan, 2022 ).

In senior high school, the objective of extracurricular activities might simply be


for students to got involved with their classmates, school, and community by
providing different opportunities to fit their personal interest. These activities
can include sports, theater, music, art, academic teams, and numerous clubs.
There are dozens of extracurricular activities in senior high school students can
choose to participate in. While many students see extracurricular activities as
time spent with their friends, an opportunity to play their favorite sport, or
getting to act in the upcoming play, the benefits of in their participation can be
so much more. ( Collings, 2020 )
Extracurricular activities are part of modern day’s academic curriculum.
Students keep themselves involved in games, sports, and cultural activities to
nourish their knowledge, attitude and skills. Ahmad stated “there is a positive
correlation between student involvement in extracurricular activities and success
in non-academic pursuits following high school. It is evident that students who
participate well in these activities have greater success on academic institution,
as well as, later in life. ( Ahmad, M & Rahman, M,2019 ).

Participation in extracurricular activities yields numerous positive impacts on


academic achievement. Firstly, involvement fosters effective time management,
instilling organizational skills and improved study habits. Additionally, these
activities often involve teamwork, promoting enhanced social skills that
contribute to better communication and collaboration in academic settings
( NCFES, 2018 ).

The commitment required in extracurriculars cultivates discipline and


responsibility, qualities that seamlessly translate into academic responsibilities.
Moreover, engaging in enjoyable activities serves as a stress outlet, positively
impacting mental well-being and potentially improving focus on academic tasks.
Lastly, these activities facilitate diverse skill development, allowing students to
hone leadership, creativity, and critical thinking skills that complement and
enhance their overall academic performance. Striking a balance between
extracurricular pursuits and academics becomes crucial for the holistic well-being
of students.
At, school students are provided numerous opportunities to use their skills and
abilities to complete tasks or solve problems ( Morris, 2019 ) Students are
considered to have academic success when they meet specific criteria on
outcomes such as grade point average, scores on standardized tests, and skill
acquisition across areas like reading and math. Extracurricular activities are
defined as school sanctioned activities that students can participate in outside of
the traditional school day. Participation in extracurricular activities has been
associated with several benefits to students, inclusive higher academic
achievement, non-cognitive skills, and transferable skills.

Negative effects of extracurricular activities on the academic achievement of


senior high school students may include time constraints leading to insufficient
study hours, fatigue affecting concentration, and potential neglect of academic
responsibilities. ( Watt, H.M & Craft, A., 2013).

The negative impact arises when extracurricular activities consume excessive


time, leaving inadequate room for academic commitments. Insufficient study
hours can hinder effective learning and result in lower academic performance.
Additionally, fatigue from balancing multiple activities may compromise a
student’s ability to concentrate and perform well in their studies. It becomes
detrimental when the pursuit of extracurriculars interferes with essential
academic responsibilities.
