introduction
Main objective in applying a wound dressings to create
an environment that is conducive to healing.
Choice of dressing products depend on the wound
bed.
There is no dressing suitable for every wound.
Epithelizing (pink)
Use non sticky products.
hydrocolloid.
Hydrogel- intrasite.
Film dressing- opsite.
Tulle grass.
Granulating(red)
With minimal exudate use as per epithelizing.
Moderate exudate-foam dressing
e.g. aquacel hydrofibre-wink the exudate.
Alginate-haemostatic.
Should be cut to fit the wound.
Heavily exudating-use stoma bag/wound bag/parcel
dressing.
Slough(yellow)
Slough inhibit granulation.
Priority is to debride:-e.g.
Osmotic-hypertonic saline.
Autolytic-hydrogel , hydrocolloid , honey.
Conservative sharp debridement.
Hydro sonic debridement.
Bio surgery-use of maggots.
Infection (yellow/green)
Use antimicrobial dressings.
Silver Ag dressing-e.g. actisorp, aquacel Ag
use plain water to clean.(saline locks in silver).
Protosan (phmb).
Quilion.
Eschar/necrosis(black)
Due to poor circulation.
Use hydrogel or hydrocolloid to soften the eschar.
Remove the eschar when it softens.
Use alginate to soak the exudate.
Odour control
Control infection to control odour.
Actisorb.
Flagyl powder or gel.
Honey.
Charcoal.
Tea bags.
DRESSING PRODUCTS
Wet gauze dressing
Are hypertonic saline impregnated ( dry or wet).
Create osmotic action that wink away necrotic tissues
and purulent debris.
Promote autolysis of loose slough and escar.
Reduce oedema and hypergranulation.
Examples are mesalt and curasalt.
WET GAUZES
Alginate dressing
Fiber dressing(sea weeds),in shapes, robes and
ribbons.
Provide moist wound environment.
Are semi permeable ,water proof outer layer/
Has haemostatic properties.
Reduce pain.
ALGINATE
HONEY SHEET DRESSING
Promote moist in wound.
Promote autolytic and osmotic debridement.
Antimicrobial activity against pseudomonas and
staphroccoco aureus.
Controls odour.
HONEY SHEETS
HYDROCOLLOIDS
An opaque dressing, bidegradable, non breathable and
adhere to the skin.
Are in form off pastes, powder and sheets.
Absorbs swell and forms gel.
HDROCOLLOIDS
HYDROCOLLOID POWDERS
YDROGELS.
Two categories i.e. natural and synthesis.
A type of colloids that expands in water, but insoluble
Available in gels, sheets, or hydrogel impregnated
dressings.
Hydrates wounds and absorb exudate.
Fill dead space in deep wounds.
HYDROGELS
TRANSPARENT FILMS
A thin sheet of see through material.
Keeps the wound moist
Transparent films
