announced the birth of their baby girl,
Zaharah Marie Steinbrunner, on April
3 at 4:47 a.m. at the Mercer Health
Hospital in Coldwater, Ohio. She
weighed 6 pounds and 14 ounces, and
was 19 inches long.
Zaharah was welcomed home by
her half sister Kylie Steinbrunner.
Maternal grandparents are Mary
and Michael Evers of Fort Recovery.
Paternal grandparents are Karen and
Walter Steinbrunner of West Union,
Ohio. Maternal great-grandparents
are Hazel Wycuff of Macedon, Ohio
and Mary Evers of Fort Recovery.
The March 8, 2012 meeting of the Galaxy
Leaders 4-H club was called to order by
President Brianna Wenning. Twelve members
answered roll call by naming their favorite
sport. Five advisors and one guest were also
present.
Sarah Brunswick led the Pledge of
Allegiance and Rachel Schmackers led the
4-H Pledge.
The secretary and treasurers reports
were read and approved. Hannah Fox made
the motion to accept and Sarah Brunswick
seconded it. Motion passed.
Under old business, the project books
were handed out to those still needing them.
The club Constitution was read for the second
time. We will vote at the April meeting.
Advisor Carol Westgerdes collected fair ticket
sponsorship money. Any member wanting to
add or drop a project has until April 1st to do
so.
Under new business, those having March
birthdays were Cody Freeman, Samantha Fritz,
and Amanda Melhouse. They each received a
candy bar. 4-H camp registration forms were
handed out to those of the correct age. The pie
sales fundraiser money and order forms were
collected. We sold 167 pies. You can pick
them up on Saturday March 31st at 1PM at the
Coldwater Library meeting room. Trash pick
up vest, gloves, bags and maps were handed
out to each family, please do your miles as
soon as possible.
Madison Fox gave a health and safety
report on walking, and a demonstration on
how to make cootie catchers. Kaleb Huser
and Rachel Schmackers will do reports at a
later date.
The meeting was adjourned by Amanda
Melhouse and seconded by Wyatt Fritz.
The Fritz and Birkmeyer families served
refreshments. The members made Thank You
note cards for the County Contest.
The Cloverbud activity was making a
leprechaun craft, and played Old Maid.
Following the meeting a group of
members and Advisor Vickie Wenning went
to Community Hospital to present the polar
fleece baby blanket we made to give to the
first baby born at Community Hospital during
4-H Week. (March 4-10). The lucky parents
were Jillian and Jared King and their daughter
Ainsley.

Galaxy Leaders
4-H Club
Jane Bruggeman and Georgia
Rindler, staff members at the Coldwater
Library, gave a demonstration on the use
of E-Books to the Coldwater Kiwanis
Club on April 10. The Coldwater Library
joined the Ohio E-Book Consortium.
Being part of the consortium of 80
libraries allows Coldwater Library
patrons to use e-books from any of those
80 libraries. Georgia showed a collection
of devices, such as the Nook, Kindle,
Kindle-Fire, and i-Pad, which can be
used to read e-books. Jane showed how
to access the sites where the e-books are
located, make the proper choices for ones
particular device, and download the title.
The library staff has noted a huge increase
in the use of e-books. Checkout numbers
were small at first, but have recently been
averaging 400 per month. Jane said the
library is scheduling help sessions each
Thursday from noon until 5 p.m. during
which patrons can bring their device to
the library and get assistance with the
downloading procedures. Some of the
advantages of e-books are portability,
24/7 access, no fees, and no fines for late
returns.

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
youll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but youll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)s performance.

April 22 is Earth Day. Started in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day is designed to create
awareness of the Earths environment and to encourage conservation efforts. If you and your family
participate in Earth Day events, such as helping clean up a local park or taking materials to a recycling
center, you know the benefits of doing your part to improve your surroundings. But are you doing
everything you can to upgrade your environment for investing?
Actually, as an investor, you can learn a lot from the lessons of Earth Day. Here are just a few
ideas:
* Diversify. If youre familiar with Earth Day, you know that it involves multiple activities, including
educational programs and do-it-now action steps. This variety is necessary because protecting our
environment is a complex challenge. Meeting your short- and long-term investment goals can be
challenging, too, but youll have a better chance of success by diversifying your investment dollars
across a range of vehicles, such as stocks, bonds, government securities and certificates of deposit
(CDs). Diversification can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio and high volatility can
be an obstacle for some people trying to follow an investment strategy. (Keep in mind, though, that
diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss.)
* Seek growth opportunities. Some people plant trees on Earth Day, hoping to watch them grow
over the years. As an investor, you, too, need to plant seeds today in the hopes of growth in the future.
That means, among other things, that when you purchase growth-oriented investments for the long
term, you need to try to stick with them and not uproot them after short-term declines in price.
* Develop good habits. If you attend an Earth Day program, you will learn about many eco-friendly
habits you can develop, from using energy-efficient light bulbs to recycling old computers and other
electronic devices. To invest successfully, its important to develop good habits, such as staying invested
in all types of markets, seeking tax-advantaged investments and reviewing your portfolio regularly to
make sure its still appropriate for your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term objectives.
* Avoid toxins. At some Earth Day events, you can learn about green substitutes for toxic
chemicals in common household cleaners. When you invest, you may also want to avoid toxins or
at least toxic behaviors, such as chasing after hot stocks that are inappropriate for your needs or
trading so frequently that you run up big fees, commissions and taxes.
* Think long term. Above all else, Earth Day is a reminder to us that we all want to leave a
healthy planet to future generations which means we need to make moves that are beneficial for the
environment over the long term. When you invest, you also need to focus on the future. That means
following a long-term investment strategy and not getting sidetracked by short-term events, such as
political crises and economic downturns.

weather. SPRiNG has finally arrived.
And the farmers are really taking
advantage of it. Some of the corn is
in all ready and some of the beans are
also. Now we just need some rain.
i guess we will just have to wait and
see what the Good Lord gives us.
You have to wonder just how the
summer is going to be after such a
warm winter. Lets hope it isnt too
warm.
i did manage to get in some fishing
this past week. Still just a little bit to
early as the water is still quite cold
in the ponds. But managed to catch
a few bluegills. Several nice slab
bluegills about the size of my hand.
That is a nice size for around here.
Put them all back to grow some more.
One of these days i am going to keep
some and see just how good they
can taste. it has been a while since i
have had some bluegills to eat. in my
opinion they are the best tasting fish
you can catch. ill probably get some
arguments on that remark.
i just need to find that one great
pond that is loaded with some nice
bluegills.
So far i havent come close.
i hope all of you out there are
doing your homework regarding the
election coming up in November. To
be a good voter you need to be an
informed voter.
And the only way that can happen
is if you start asking questions of the
candidates. They all have web sites
and i am sure you can Google
them on your computer. You will be
surprised what you come up with. Just
remember-dont believe everything
you read and only half what you hear.

Question: My dog swallowed my medication that I dropped on the floor. It wont hurt him, right?
Answer: While some medications may not cause any harm, some may be fatal to your pet. If the animal has ingested the
medication within the last 15 minutes, you should make the animal vomit and then call your veterinarian. If it has been longer than
15 minutes, you should contact the Pet Poison Helpline or your veterinarian immediately. You should avoid giving aspirin or Tylenol
to your pet unless under the advice of your veterinarian. They can be fatal to cats.
The Pet Poison Helpline reports that more than half of calls are for pets that have accidentally ingested human mediations.
Here are some statistics from IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics about the top five human prescription drugs dispensed in
the United States:
Lipitor (atorvastatin). Used to reduce cholesterol levels. Generally when pets ingest Lipitor, only mild side effects are seen,
such as vomiting and diarrhea. Lipitor is not considered to have a high toxicity level for pets. Lipitor is not used in veterinary
medicine.
Nexium (esomeprazole). An anti-ulcer medication and proton-pump inhibitor that results in reduced gastric acid secretion.
While it is used in veterinary medicine, mild side effects can include vomiting and diarrhea. Pet owners should watch their pet
closely. Symptoms usually subside on their own.
Plavix (xlopidogrel). Adrug that affects platelets in humans, inhibiting clot formation and reducing the risk of stroke. It is rarely
used in veterinary medicine. It has a wide margin of safety and is not generally considered to be acutely toxic. You may observe
mild vomiting and diarrhea.
Advair Diskus (fluticasone propionate and almeterol). Used for treating asthma and administered through an inhaler, contains
beta-atagonist drugs that expand the lungs and steroids that decrease inflammation in the lungs. Because inhalers contain many
doses, dogs that chew them are exposed to massive amounts of the drug at once. This can result in heart arrhythmias, an elevated
heart rate, agitation, vomiting, and even acute collapse. Severe electrolyte abnormalities such as very low potassium levels are
likely and can be life-threatening without immediate veterinary treatment.
Ambilify (aripiprazole). An atypical antipsychotic agent that is used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and clinical
depression. Clients should keep this drug out of a pets reach, as ingestion can result in profound lethargy, vomiting, hyperthermia,
significant changes in heart rate and blood pressure, and seizures. If a pet ingests this drug, it needs immediate veterinary
attention.
Here are some tips they give for preventing pets from ingesting human medications:
Store human medications in a different location from pet medications. Pet Poison Helpline often takes calls from pet owners
who accidentally give their human medications to their pet.
Weekly pill holders are irresistible to some dogs because they resemble chew toys and make rattling noises. The danger is
that a dog could ingest a full seven days worth of medications, significantly increasing the risk for poisoning.
Avoid putting medications into plastic storage baggies before traveling these are not pet proof and can easily be chewed
into by dogs.

A blood drive in memory of Joe
Werling will be held on Saturday, April
28, from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the
Burkettsville Shelterhouse located at
100 West Main Street in Burkettsville.
Donors are asked to go online at www.

Joe Werling was a lifelong
supporter of the Red Cross whether
it was providing donor incentives
for community blood drives (Pint
for a Pound) or racing Go Karts to
raise money. He was also a volunteer
firefighter so helping others was
something Joe believed in and acted
upon.
Joe was a loyal blood donor
himself, said Kendra Werling, Joes
wife. Our daughter Noelle was born
with cardiac defects and received blood
products before she passed away. i
would like to see the entire community
attend this drive in Joes honor to
continue his loyal donations.

pOTATOES
1 lb. beef stew meat cut in 1
inch pieces
1- 14 oz can of beef broth
2 medium sweet potatoes
cut into 2 inch pieces.
1 onion cut into chunks
2 thick slices of bacon
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon salt
pepper to taste
2 tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoon water
Spray a large crock pot with
cooking spray or grease the
sides and bottom.. Combine all
ingredients, except cornstarch
and water, in a slow cooker
and mix well. Cover and cook
on low for 4 -5 hours or until
meat and vegetables are tender.
Transfer the vegetables and
meat, after they are cooked , to
a bowl and cover to keep warm
while making the sauce.
Add the cornstarch and water
to the liquid in the crock-pot
and cook until thickened. Pour
over the meat and vegetables
and serve.

Registration for the 2012-2013
school year for the Fort Recovery
Preschool will be held on Tuesday,
April 24th at 7:00 p.m. The registra-
tion meeting will take place in the
Auditeria at the Fort Recovery El-
ementary/Middle School on Sharps-
burg Road.
The preschool is operated under
the State of Ohio licensing rules and
uses a developmentally appropriate
curriculum. The preschool staff con-
sists of Mrs. Mary Diller, mrs. Lynn
Kahlig, Mrs. Jill Dues, Mrs. Barb
Alig, and Mrs. Lisa Lennartz, and
is supervised by the Fort Recovery
School District and their governing

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could.Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated

Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found

If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.

Dear Residents of Coldwater, Ohio,

Today i was given the opportunity to go along on the Coldwater High
School senior choir members field trip to La Comedia Dinner Theater
in Springboro, Ohio. At intermission, the two male servers responsible
for our group came to the table i was sitting at. They asked What
school do these students come from? After answering, Coldwater, they
asked where that school was as they never heard of it. After explaining
where Coldwater was located, they asked if we were a private school
district. i said, No, we were a public school district. They needed
some convincing on that answer as they said they never worked with
a group of public school students that behaved so well. They had such
nice compliments for the students that i shared with them. i told the
servers that i was a retired teacher from Coldwater and that as long
as i taught, and took students on field trips, the students were always
told to act in a mature manner as the represent the town of Coldwater.
The teachers have high expectations of students on field trips, as well
as other activites. During my 35 years of going on field trips i have
received numerous compliments about the students of the Coldwater
Exempted Village School District. Today was another example of the
high expectations we have of students.
Congratulations students. Congratulations to the parents who raise
these wonderful students.
Thank you, Ms. Wendel, for allowing me to go with you and the
students on this field trip. i truly enjoyed my day.
One last thing i need to say, the bus ride home was extremely windy
Mrs. Sue Buschur, the bus driver, did a nice job of controlling the bus.

An invisible Thread is a true
story that will change the way you
look at street people and particu-
larly panhandlers. The book
begins.....Excuse me lady, do you
have any spare change? i am hun-
gry. When i heard him, i didnt
really hear him. His words were
part of the clatter, like a car horn or
someone yelling for a cab. They
were, you could say, just noise-
the kind of nuisance new Yorkers
learn to tune out. So i walked right
by him, as if he wasnt there. But
then, just few yards past him, i
stopped. And then-and im still not
sure why i did this-i came back.
Laura Schroff met Maurice
on the busy New York City street
corner and the meeting changed
both their lives. She offered to buy
Maurice a hamburger at McDon-
alds and this began a weekly com-
mitment of McDonald meetings.
She immediately felt a draw to this
troubled boy and she was right, he
was especially street smart and he
knew what i call, the difference.
Lauras turbulent childhood is
inserted throughout the book and
we learn of her abusive alcoholic
father and the toll it took on her
and her siblings. She is deter-
mined to help Maurice and takes a
risk to meet his family and makes a
visit to his home in the projects of
NYC. Maurice makes her promise
to never come near his area again
as she could be in grave danger.
The description of his familys
living arrangement still stays with
me!
Their Monday meetings turn
into visits at her apartment and
lessons in civility that we all take
for granted. Several that come
to mind include his not knowing
basics such as how to blow his
nose, not owning a toothbrush or
a change of clothing. She teaches
him how to set a proper table and
table manners.
Having never celebrated Christ-
mas she lets him decorate her tree
and buys him gifts. She takes him
to her family Thanksgiving cele-
bration where he is included in the
childrens festivities.
Laura makes a pro-
found difference in
Mauicess life and he
feels loved and taken
care of.
To assure that he
has enough to eat,
she offers to make
him a school lunch
each day and he has
one request. if you
make me lunch, he
said, Will you put
it in a brown paper
bag?
i didnt really understand the
question. Okay, sure. But why
do you want it in a brown paper
bag? Because when i see kids
come to school with their lunch
in a brown paper bag, that means
someone cares about them. i
looked away when Maurice said
that, so he wouldnt see me tear
up. A simple brown paper bag, i
thought. To me, it meant nothing.
To him, it was everything.
Laura marries, moves from
the area, and things change for
a while but there is
always their bond
and to this day, they
are friends and have
a close relationship.
Laura writes about
their frst meeting,
Whatever it was,
it drew me to him,
as if we were bound
by some invisible,
unbreakable thread.
And whatever it is, it
binds us still.
i highly recom-
mend this novel and promise you
will be moved and forever grateful
for what you have been spared.

has released its 2011 resident sat-
isfaction study of Ohios nursing
facilities. A total of 957 nursing
facilities were surveyed with The

a 94% overall satisfaction rat-

Hospice, recently was granted new
credentials by the National Hospice
& Palliative Care Organization.
Seger, a resident of Ft. Loramie, is
now a Certified Hospice & Palliative
Care Administrator (CHPCA).
With offices in Greenville,
Portland and Coldwater, State of the
Heart cares for patients and families
in eastern indiana and western Ohio
who are confronting a life limiting
illness. The nonprofit agency has
provided hospice care for more than
30 years to area communities.

Seger has been

in that position until

Christmas in June! Four days of
fun and learning is in store for youths
ages 9-13 this summer. Registration
materials are now available for 4-H
camp. Two camping sessions will be held
and a youth may chose to attend either
session. Dates are Tuesday-Friday, June
5-8 OR Monday-Thursday, June 11-14.
The camps are held at Harbor Point 4-H
Camp located on Grand Lake St. Marys
near Celina. Campers are responsible for
transportation to and from camp.
The event will feature morning
workshops, afternoon crafts, water
activities, nature education, special
evening programs, campfire, flag
programs, cabin time, crazy fun at
mealtimes, cabin skits and fellowship.
Campers may request two cabin mates
and will be placed with at least one
friend.
The camps are staffed by trained
4-H teen camp counselors, the camp
nursing staff, adult volunteers and the
4-H Extension professionals.
Registrations are accepted on a first
paid basis and may be secured at the
Extension Office, from 4-H club advisors
and from the web site mercer.osu.edu.
The Mercer County 4-H Committee is
providing camp scholarships to families
needing some financial assistance.
A scholarship application may be
requested on the application form or
may be downloaded from mercer.osu.
edu under the 4-H forms tab. Cost is $
95 per child if registered by May 1 or
$100 per child if registering after that
date. Registrations will be accepted
until camp is filled. The camp fee
includes all meals, supplies, activities
and insurance.

On Saturday March 31st, the Parkway
FFA Chapter sent students to Columbus
State Fairgrounds to participate in many dif-
ferent CDE contests.
The Nature interpretation team placed
13th out of 20 teams. Lando Bruns placed
49th, Kameron Roehm placed 56th, Jar-
ret ONeill Placed 64th, and Jordan Strader
placed 72nd.
The Wildlife Management team placed
26th out of 69 teams. Jack Roth placed 54th,
Josh Ford placed 98th, Adam Stutz placed
163rd, and Brandon Moorman placed 236th.
The Equine Management team placed
71st out of 124th teams. Brandon Berry
placed 223rd, Samantha Wood placed 331st,
Hayley Bollenbacher placed 337th, and Si-

The Carthagena U.S. Post Office
was established May 13, 1852. As of
October 18, 1962, that Post Office was
discontinued, and became effective
October 28, 1962. The Carthagena
Rural Station Post Office at Saint
Charles Seminary began October 29,
1962, (the day after Carthagenas Post
Office closed.) The Post Office at
Saint Charles was closed December
31, 2007.
As indicated on this 1888 Plat
Map of Carthagena, the Post Office
was located on the north side of Clay
Street, just two doors west of Pearl
Street, on the property owned by J.
Schlosser. John Schlosser, Sr. was
appointed Postmaster on December
4, 1885 and Catharina Schlosser was
appointed Postmistress on November
14, 1888.

challenge in 1852. April 21, 1852,
Addison Heald, Carthagena, OH wrote
to the U.S. Postmaster Appointment
Office: Sickness has prevented
me from obtaining the necessary
information to answer the inquiries
from the Appointment Office, at an
earlier period. Enclosed is a map
of Carthagena and vicinity, being a
map of the country four miles square,
Range 3, Town 7, Section 18.

The Daily Standard. interviewed
Bertha Epps, on her 102nd birthday
in September 1993. She recalled Joe
Links Store and Post Office on St. Rt.
274 on the west side of the Village.
Former Carthagena Resident Sister
Anna Kesson, from Clarence NY,
wrote me, Joe Link ran the General
Store of groceries and some clothing.
in addition, the store served as a Post
Office, Barber Shop and a one pump
gas station. Mr. Link operated this
one man show for over 30 years.
The closing of the Railroad,
commonly known as the C.H. & D,
affected the Post Offices rural mail
delivery, as indicated in the April 14,
1923, The Daily Standard: The Star
Route out of Celina to Montezuma,
Carthagena, Chickasaw and Maria
Stein has been let to Perry Beckdolt
following the abandonment of the D.
T. & C. Railroad. Discontinued for
years, the route had to re-established
by the local Postal Department.
With the 1923 closing of the
Railroad, and the closing of the
Carthagena Post Office in 1962, and
the closing of the Post Office at Saint
Charles Seminary at Carthagena in
2007, the mail is now delivered by the
Celina Post Office. The Mission of
the Mercer County Historical Society
is To Preserve local history and To
Educate the Public about that history.

The regular meeting of St.
Rochus #288 Knights of St. John
was held on March 26th. All offi-
cers were present. The rosary was
recited for all living and deceased
members of the auxiliary, espe-
cially those in hospitals and nurs-
ing homes. The President thanked
everybody for helping at the March
24th chicken fry. She also thanked
anyone who helped with the coun-
tryfest mailing. Lots of help showed
up and it was finished in one hour.
A thank you note was received from
Joe Gehret for our recent gift. Dis-
trict meeting will be on May 17th
in Fort Loramie. Sign up will be
at the April 23rd meeting. On May
7th we will have a Bloodmobile.
Volunteers are needed to work and
bake cookies. Lunch committee for
the April 23 meeting will be: Al-
frieda Albers, Elsie Winner, Verlina
Ahrens, and Marilyn Clune. JoAnn
Albers reported that 570 rosaries
were made in March. She sent
400 to family rosaries. Door prizes
were won by Donna Stachler, Judy
Hilgefort, June Bertke, Lou Ann
Kremer, and Margie Ronnebaum.
Lunch was served and birthday and
anniversary gifts were presented.
The next meeting will be on April
23rd beginning with social hour at
6:30 with dinner to follow at 7:00.

Columbus Ohio. The Chapter
received the top honors of first
place Gold Seal chapter for
the second year in a row. This
honor was capped with 8 first-
place finishes, 11 second-place
finishes, and 15 third-place
finishes in various contests. The
chapter was also excited to see
the awarding of the Leader Award
(State recognition of member
accomplishments) to Brooke
Boznango, Tiffany Deitsch, and
Kylie Snyder. Parkway FBLA
closed out the conference with
the retiring of the 2011-2012
state officers, Reporter Brooke
Boznango and Nortwest Vice
President Kylie Snyder; then
followed by the installation of
State Secretary Katelynn Kraner
and Northwest Vice President
Tiffany Deitsch. Congratulations

VAN WERT - The Van Wert
Cougar baseball team only scored
in two innings against Coldwater
Thursday evening.
Those were two big innings,
however, which helped the Cougars
cruise to an 11-1, five-inning, non-
conference win at Smiley Park.
Van Wert junior Andrew Todd
went the distance on the mound
for the Cougars, allowing only one
earned run to score. He walked
four, and didnt record a strikeout,
but had good command of his
pitches. Obviously, when youve
got a kid throwing strikes, its a lot
easier to play defense - we try to
preach that. [Andrew] has taken
that to heart. He threw a great game
Saturday, and he came back and
threw a great game today against
a really good team, said Cougar
coach Charlie Witten.
Coldwater struck first to open
the game, when catcher Alex
Stammen tripled and came in to
score on a sacrifice fly by shortstop
Randal Muhlenkamp. Todd settled
in, however, and held the Cavs
scoreless the remainder of the
inning.
After a scoreless first inning,
the Cougar bats came alive in
the bottom half of the second.
Sophomore shortstop Nathan
Stoller reached on error and junior
second baseman Mason Krugh
followed with a single. Todd then
laid down a sacrifice bunt, but a
fielding error by the first baseman
allowed Stoller to score, Krugh to
advance to third and Todd to reach.
Senior third baseman Zach Wood
then brought Krugh in to score on
an infield hit to make the score
2-0.
Freshman left fielder Brant
Henry later recorded an RBi single
and senior third baseman Matt
Cucciarre followed with a tow
RBi double. The Cougars struck
for five runs in the frame to take a
5-1 lead into the third inning.
Todd tossed a perfect third,
as did Coldwater pitcher Vinny
Droesch. While Todd continued
to hold the Cavalier offense at
bay, the Cougar bats struck again
in the bottom of the fifth. The first
Van Wert batter of the frame was
retired, but they followed with five
Cougars pass

Not a whole lot got done last
Saturday at the Castle and its
surrounding grounds. The Bride
and the warm March had me staying
exceptionally busy with spraying,
mulching, cutting, and planting. All
my equipment, some of it almost as
old as myself, needed maintenance
before i put it to use. Modification
of the stuff i have to work with for
my one-pony operation has become
a source of enjoyment in my semi
retirement years. My sweet corn is
in the ground, but i am waiting a
little longer to plant our sunflowers.
i decided my recent efforts justified
a little loafing. The rain put a stop
to the local corn planting but with
our recent strange weather pattern,
it was nice to know that it could
still rain in Ohio during the month
of April. Actually i was just not
motivated for any real work Saturday
so i watched an expert down a tree
before the precipitation started for
real. The grace shown by the guy
maneuvering a cherry picker and
chainsaw in the fort- footer near a
house was similar to watching a pro
swinging a golf club. The afternoon
TV sports were a little lacking from
my point of view. After lunch i found
a college womens softball game. i
personally have nothing against the
game, as my daughter played in a
state championship contest a few
years ago, but it just does not excite
me for television fare. i checked the
listing and discovered the Big Ten
Network was covering the Buckeyes
playing Michigan in lacrosse. i tried
to expand my sporting knowledge
horizons and watched that action
for a while. Once i learned a little
more about the game of lacrosse, i
watched a little indoor midget car
racing and some outdoor golf. i
find it interesting that stock racing
has its biggest event of the year,
the Daytona 500, as its opening
event in late February. PGA Golf
is somewhat similar, hosting the
Masters, its premier event, in early
April. When you lead with your
best shot, everything else tends to
be second tier, not the first class
stuff we were given earlier. i am
not a racing expert, but watching
the pro golf tournament at Harbour
Town was somewhat similar to
seeing the JV game after the varsity,
or perhaps the freshman contest as
the nights finale. As i was channel
surfing later in the afternoon i did
see a hockey match, but i decided i
had expanded my personal sporting
knowledge sufficiently with the
lacrosse earlier in the day. A little
trivia information came to mind
while watching the lacrosse contest.
Jim Brown, the greatest running
back or perhaps the greatest athlete
of all time in the NFL, was an
All American football player at
Syracuse, but was considered by
many as a better collegiate lacrosse
player than football. They did not
offer big contracts for guys who
played with funny looking sticks
in those or even in present days,
consequently Brown chose football
and was the first round pick of
Cleveland. However, he did quit
the sport surprisingly in the prime
of his pro career. His last season for
the Browns was 1965. He did not
report to camp the next season in
order to complete his filming role in
The Dirty Dozen.

went 2-3. They each had an RBi
and two runs scored.
Droesch took the loss for the
Cavs. He went 3 1/3 innings,
allowing five runs - four earned -
on five hits. He walked one and
struck out two. Stammen led the
Coldwater offense, picking up the
triple for the Cavs only extra-base
hit of the game. Muhlenkamp
added an RBi.
The win improves the Cougars
to 6-7 on the season. They host
the Kenton Wildcats Friday.

The Booster Wall will be located in

tiles of two available sizes. The message
of choice will be an enduring testament
visible to race fans and race teams
anytime they visit Eldora Speedway.
Available tile sizes are 4 x 8 with up
to three lines of engraving or 8 x 8 with
up to six lines of engraving. Each line
can hold up to 20 characters including
spacing and punctuation. introductory
pricing for the engraved tiles is $100 for
the 4 x 8 tile or $150 for the 8 x 8
tile. in honor of their longtime support,
members of the original Eldora Booster
Club are being offered special one-time
member pricing of $59 for the 4 x 8
tile. A nominal $5 shipping and handling
fee will be applied to each order.
The first installation of engraved tiles
will be unveiled in a special ceremony
prior to the 2012 WiX Filters Baltes
Classic on Sunday evening, September
2. To be included in this inaugural
observance, and to receive the special
introductory pricing, orders must be
received no later than July 15.
As an added incentive, persons
purchasing engraved tiles prior to the
July 15 deadline will receive a miniature
brick replica of their purchase, complete
with engraving.
