Group 1: The “Visual Storyboarders”
Choose a favorite story or movie. Your group will draw a storyboard
illustrating its exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and
denouement. Present your drawings and explain each plot point.
Group 2: The “Dramatic Plot Players”
Select a scene from a favorite story or movie to act out. While performing,
clearly demonstrate where your scene fits into the overall plot, and explain
all five major plot points of the full story, including the denouement.
Group 3: The “Original Plot Weavers”
Your group will write a short original story (1-2 paragraphs) that clearly
showcases all five plot points: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action,
and denouement. Read your story aloud and highlight each plot point.
Our story begins with a wealthy merchant who owned a sprawling farm and,
secretly, possessed the rare gift of understanding the language of all
animals. Among his many beasts were a powerful bull, whose days were
spent tirelessly pulling the plow, and a clever ass, who enjoyed a much
lighter workload, usually just carrying burdens or the merchant himself.
Inciting Incident:
One day, the merchant overheard the bull complaining bitterly to the ass
about its endless, grueling work in the fields, lamenting its difficult life of
constant labor.
Rising Action:
The ass, ever so cunning and enjoying its easier life, saw an opportunity. It
advised the bull to feign sickness the next morning: “Just lie there, groan,
and refuse to eat! They’ll surely leave you alone for the day.” The bull, eager
for a rest, took the advice. When the servants reported the bull’s “illness,”
the merchant, knowing the truth because of his special gift, simply ordered
them to yoke the ass to the plow in the bull’s place. The ass then endured a
day of back-breaking, unfamiliar labor, suffering greatly and regretting its
own cleverness. Later, the merchant again overheard the exhausted ass tell
the bull a terrifying lie: “If you don’t get back to work immediately, the
master intends to send you to the butcher!”
Climax:
Terrified by the thought of being slaughtered, the bull immediately
“recovered,” rising with vigor and eagerness to return to its duties.
Falling Action:
The bull was yoked and diligently worked the fields as usual. The merchant
observed the entire scene with a knowing smile, fully understanding how the
ass’s manipulation had ultimately backfired and driven the bull back to its
toil.
Resolution:
The bull continued its work, and the ass, though not directly punished,
learned a harsh lesson about the unintended and often painful consequences
of its own deceptive advice.
