ECM Grounding
Grounding
Always ensure the ground strap on the ECM is connected
to the engine block to prevent EMI, Electro Magnetic
Interference, affecting the interior electronic circuits of
the ECM
Warning!
When carrying out welding or electrostatic paint spraying,
special precautions should always be followed.
These are listed in the Perkins 2800 Series, Mechanical
and Electronic Installation Manual. TSL 4262, 2300 TSL

High reliability
External connectors most vulnerable: bent ‘jacks’, J1, J2
over tightened ECM plugs etc
No internal fuses or serviceable parts
Never replace an ECM without first connecting Electronic
Service Tool (EST) and carrying out basic diagnostic
checks
The ECM is the last component you should suspect

Ignition Circuit
Ignition Key Switch
This switch may be used for a controlled engine stop. The ignition
switch does not switch off power to the ECM. The ECM remains
connected to the battery via a fuse/circuit breaker, even when the
ignition is switched off. Can also be used to reset faults. The
Electronic Service Tool (EST) cannot communicate with the ECM
when the Ignition switch is off.
Injection Disabled
If you want to stop the engine, use the ‘Injection Disabled’. This
allows communication with the service tool (EST) to continue.
Emergency Shut-down
This button, interrupts the main battery power supply to the ECM and
stops the engine. Not Recommended, Don’t forget the ECM is a
computer, you do not just ‘chop off ’ the power.

2800 Series Engine Protection
There are three alarm levels provided which are defined as:
Level 1 - Operator Warning
To warn the operator or machine control system of a possible
condition within the ECM control system that requires the operators
attention.
Level 2 – Action (called De-rate or Alert)
To inform the operator or machine control system to take action to
enable the proper control of the system (i.e. to externally de-rate or
reduce speed). This is normally used by the OEM to stop the engine.
Level 3 – Shutdown
To inform the operator or machine control system that the ECM has
shutdown due to an operating condition reaching an unacceptable
level; or if in the critical override condition, that the product is now
operating in a condition outside of its scope of supply and may cause
injury or be damaged in such a way as to invalidate the warranty

Injection Disable/Critical Override
When critical over ride has been enabled in the service tool - the switch when 'open'
allows the protection to be over ridden, the switch when closed enables the normal
protection - the diagram reads the opposite. The idea was that if you've enabled a
feature to over ride protection and the wire drops off then the fail safe results in you
being able to run to destruction, which is what you want to do - ie protect the patient,
not kill the patient because of a broken wire!
In the ‘Remote Control’ configuration, the ‘Injection Disabled’ input will be open or
close to stop and start the engine
(The Ignition switch will be on all the time)
‘Critical Override’ Not Recommended, ignores oil pressure, coolant temperature,
atmospheric pressure shutdowns when on

2800 Series Critical Override
If the particular operation of the engine is in a critical application (i.e. safety
critical standby generator) the protection system can be overridden to
ensure the continuation of the electricity supply during engine fault
conditions
The critical override will be set by a switch input from the OEM. The critical
override input shall be enabled in the service tool via a Factory password
When activated the ECM will log the condition and continue to run the engine
in all fault conditions with the exception of Over-speed shutdown and
Emergency shutdown. If the engine enters a fault condition the ECM will log
the event in memory
To clear logged shutdown events that occur when the ECM is operating in
Critical Override, a Factory password is required
It should be noted that any warranty given on the engine becomes
void if the engine is run in a fault condition with the critical override
enabled as the engine could run to destruction

Speed/Timing Calibration
If the ECM has been replaced and you are unable to take
data from existing ECM, or if repairs have been
completed to the engine drive train/replaced sensors
The engine must be running at 1100 rpm for ECM
calibration

Crankshaft Timing Notch
The crankcase notch is accessed by removing the access plug
The timing probe is then installed in this location
Use a small screwdriver to locate timing notch when installing the
probe to ensure that the probe is
not installed too far into the
engine resulting in damage
to the probe
Crankshaft calibration machined
groove position is 60O back

ECM Timing Calibration Probe
This view of the Timing Calibration Probe (magnetic pickup) shows how
the air gap (clearance) is established between the probe and the face of
the crankshaft counterweight.
With piston top dead centre (TDC) position located at the flywheel,
but not locked, rotate the engine anti-clockwise approximately 3” to 4”
of damper movement. Remove the timing probe blanking plug to
locate the machined slot in the crankshaft counterweight.
The timing probe will be damaged if the engine is rotated with
the probe in the slot or if it is hit by the counterweight.
Insert the Timing Calibration Probe into the block until it touches the
machined face of the crankshaft [Link], retract the probe
1 mm (.040 in.) to provide a running clearance.

ECM Timing Calibration Probe (cont/d)
If the probe clearance is not set correctly, erratic performance or failure
of the timing calibration sequence can occur, or the probe may be
damaged.
The calibration offset range is limited to ±3 crankshaft [Link] the
timing is out of range, calibration is aborted. The previous value will be
retained and a diagnostic message will be logged.

Timing Calibration Probe Installation
1mm (0.040in)
The probe measures the angular position of the crankshaft and compares this
to the measurement coming from the Camshaft Speed/Timing Sensor.
The ECM then makes a correction or calibration if necessary

2300/2800 Series Cold Start Mode
Timing Advance
Additional timing advance is used in cold weather to compensate for
the increased ignition delay of cold fuel and cold air
Several conditions exist in cold engines which cause increased white
smoke from incomplete combustion
Conditions
The inlet air is cold, and does not get as hot under compression as
normal ambient temperatures
The fuel is cold and does not ignite as easily
Ignition delay, (the actual time it takes for the fuel to start burning)
is increased
The piston, cylinder wall and head are cold, which draws heat from
the compressed air close to the metal surfaces
The cold fuel does not burn as rapidly

2800 Series Governor Stability
Establish how much governor instability (ie rpm above and below rated speed)
(Increasing governor proportional gain - hunt duration will increase)
(Decreasing governor proportional gain - hunt duration will decrease)
Adjustments
20 rpm below rated speed - adjust min stability and reduce proportional gain
20 rpm above rated speed - adjust max stability and reduce proportional gain
Typical 2806
Governor prop gain 26,214 (range 1 - 39999)
Governor max stability factor - 3146
Governor min stability factor - 1573
Type in value ‘O’ and configuration will return to its default value
Note: Altering these values can affect steady state and transient engine
speed/response
