    The Joseon Dynasty lasted from 1392 to 1897 in Korea. It was established by Yi Seong-gye who overthrew the Goryeo Dynasty and established a strong central government. Important figures included King Taejong who established the capital in Seoul and promoted Confucianism, and King Sejong who created the Korean alphabet Hangeul to promote literacy. The dynasty experienced foreign invasions including two by the Manchu and the Japanese invasions during the Imjin War in the late 16th century. It eventually declined in the late 19th century due to Japanese and Chinese influence and pressure, leading to the establishment of the Korean Empire.
