REVIEW TEST 2 ● ANSWER KEY
Writing
Can write a letter of complaint with appropriate register, structure and conventions.
Sample answer
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing on behalf of myself and my friends to complain about your decision to close our local youth centre. We would
like to draw your attention to how important the centre is to young people in my area. We would also like to point out how
unfair your decision is as you have not consulted with young people in the area at all.
The centre is regularly used by over 100 young people. Without this centre young people would have nowhere to meet and
hang out with their friends. We understand that there have been complaints about noise around the centre, but we would like
to point out that the noise is usually caused by young people who are not attending the centre. The same is true for litter on
the streets. For example, I attended the centre twice last week and didn’t see any of the people there dropping litter. I did,
however, see other young people who are not members of the centre leaving rubbish on the streets.
As you are responsible for making decisions about facilities in this town, we would like you to reconsider your decision. It is
clearly unfair to punish all young people because of the bad behaviour of a few. We would like to meet with you to discuss
options for keeping the centre open. We have contacted the local media about this issue, and look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Edward Jones
