Verbal tenses indicate when the action of the verb takes place: if at the moment of speaking (present),
at an earlier moment (past) or at a later moment (future). In English, the verb tenses of
present, past or future also have a continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous form, which further define
more the moment in which the action of the verb is carried out, the continuity and the conclusion of it.
This table provides an overview of all the verb tenses that exist in English, as well as a brief
explanation about its use and the rules of conjugation. Additionally, the column of temporal markers indicates the
words that often serve as a guide to identify the verb tense that should be used.
Present Simple, also called simple present or present tense, is the present time in English. It resembles
to thepresent indicativein Spanish and is used to express actions that take place at the moment of
speak, which are part of a routine and are repeated regularly, actions that follow one after another, that
are scheduled, or made with permanent validity.
