Johann Sebastian Bach (March 31 [O.S.

March 21], 1685 – July 28,

1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque
period, widely regarded as one of the greatest composers in
Western music history124. Born in Eisenach, Germany, into a prolific
musical family, Bach was orphaned young and raised by his elder
brother, who provided further musical training12. He developed
extraordinary skill on the organ, harpsichord, violin, and composed
extensively across many musical forms.

Bach worked in several German cities including Arnstadt,

Mühlhausen, Weimar, Köthen, and finally Leipzig, where he served
as Thomaskantor (cantor at St. Thomas Church) from 1723 until his
death. His responsibilities included composing for the Lutheran
church and directing both vocal and instrumental ensembles134.
Despite sometimes difficult relations with employers, he was
respected for his mastery of composition and organ performance.

He composed an extensive and diverse oeuvre, including:

 Orchestral works such as the Brandenburg Concertos

 Solo instrumental works like the cello suites and sonatas

and partitas for solo violin

 Keyboard masterpieces such as The Well-Tempered Clavier

and Goldberg Variations

 Organ music including Toccata and Fugue in D minor and

the Schübler Chorales

 Choral compositions like the monumental Mass in B minor

and St Matthew Passion12345.

Bach’s music is celebrated for its intellectual depth, technical

command, and artistic beauty, synthesizing various national styles
and advancing musical forms such as counterpoint. His legacy
influenced many composers and helped define the Baroque style.
He died in Leipzig at 65, following complications from eye
surgery156.

Four of his twenty children, including Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl

Philipp Emanuel, Johann Christoph Friedrich, and Johann Christian
Bach, became noted composers themselves, continuing the Bach
musical dynasty14.

In sum, Bach represents the pinnacle of Baroque composition, his

works remain central to the classical repertoire, and he is honored
as a towering musical genius whose influence extends through
centuries146.
