How to master the art of writing Paper 2 answers

The best way to approach Paper 2 is to make a combination of the following

strategies:

1. Application is absolutely locked in. You can only mention the business or the
business situations you see in the case. Refrain from making assumptions or
creating situations in the internal/external environment which aren’t mentioned in
the case, just to support your answer. If a point needs to go in your answer, it must
have some clue/root/hint in the case connected to it.

2. Never approach the case from only the perspective of owners. Owners are just one
of the many stakeholders and just answering from their perspective makes it
biased.

3. Approach the case as a consultant who has been approached by the business in
the case to help them identify what has been going well for them, and what hasn’t
been going so well.

4. Provide reasons for success and solutions to problems of the business.

Recall the writing skills (Knowledge, Application, Analysis, Evaluation).

Steps needed to identify writing skill clues hidden in the questions

1. Always take an extra minute to divide the question into the writing skill requirements

each writing skill.
fi
• Knowledge - identify the word which you can de ne in a one line business
concept.

• Application - the entire case, numbers, objectives, etc.

• Analysis - discuss the advantage and disadvantages of the concept in
knowledge on the business in the case.

• Evaluation - provide a judgement on whether your analysis will work or not work.
Do this by dividing your evaluation into 3 levels.

Level 1 - Answer whether the decisions being taken or correct or

incorrect.

Level 2 - If the decisions are correct, provide reason(s) from the case to
support it.

Level 3 - If the decisions are incorrect, provide solution(s) which can be

implemented in the short term to nullify them.

Important to remember:

• Always check you answer according to the template provided above to ensure all
requirements are being met.
