II Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions.
Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live. Similarly, music is a part of many
people’s lives. Both language and music play a huge role in our culture, and here are some of
their similarities.
Both language and music have a writing system. In English, we record language using a
collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading this
collection of letters and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form
of music. By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time.
Both vary with culture. You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to
the language they use. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the
world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and
providing us with music for every situation.
Both share emotion. Of course you may be able to see my feelings in my face, but you will
know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can show you exactly how the composer was
or is feeling, and allows us to share in that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to
sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. In contrast, you have probably
also listened to sad music when feeling down. We have all used music to express or process our
emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.

Music is an almost everlasting presence in our lives; whether it’s the latest song playing
every time we turn on the radio, or a long-forgotten classic playing in the shops. Thanks to mp3
players, you will never be without music. As long as you have a pair of earphones, you can listen
to your favourite artists, without any interruption.
My favourite artist, the singer-songwriter Ben Howard, is currently on tour in Europe. Although
it sounds tempting to me to write about Ben Howard and his musical genius only, it could be
boring for anyone who isn’t as interested in him as I am.

Instead, I would concentrate on something that he is famous for, and which many people
love: live music. If you’ve ever been lucky enough to see your favourite band in concert or go to
a music festival, then you know what I mean. Perhaps, you play an instrument yourself - like the
guitar, for example - or sing in a choir. Any kind of musical talent means you can enjoy live music
any time you feel like it as you can perform yourself!
There is something so uniquely special about experiencing music live. Beautiful, well-played
pieces of music can be electrifying. There are songs that can make the hair on the back of your
neck stand up. It can make you want to laugh or cry; it can make you want to sing or dance along;
it can transport you far away from anything troubling you in your daily life.
There is nothing that compares to standing in the middle of a crowd, watching your favourite
singer or band perform their greatest hits. So if you get the opportunity, go and see them live - it
will be something you never forget.
