WEEK 1: Lesson 4: Illustrates a Probability Distribution for a Discrete

Random Variable and Its Properties

Prepared by:

JANNET D. DE CHAVEZ, LPT

SHS/Teacher II
Preface

This Learning Activity Sheet was made to enhance the knowledge and skills of the students
according to the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) of the Third Quarter of Statistics and
Probability for Grade 11. This was made to develop the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) of each
student. This will improve the Analyzing, Applying, Evaluating and Creating Skills. These are important
skills that will prepare our students for the 21 st Century. Specifically, you will learn how researchers
determine normal intervals for specific medical tests by using a normal distribution. You will see how
the same methods are used to determine the lifetimes of batteries, the strength of ropes, and many
other traits. You are expected to answer the activities diligently.

This learning activity sheet in Statistics and Probability for Senior High is intended for grade 11
and grade 12 students. The goal is to provide a clear and intuitive approach to the topics while
maintaining an acceptable level of critical thinking for mathematical accuracy.

This Learning activity sheet provides additional insight and practice in solving problems
marketing, finance, and everyday life situations. These examples have been worded for the students
to understand them better.

THIRD QUARTER: RANDOM VARIABLES AND PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION

Content Standards

The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of random variables and probability distribution.

Performance Standards

The learner is able to apply an appropriate random variable for a given real-life problem (such as in decision
making and games of chance).

Lesson 4 Probability Distribution for a Discrete and Its Properties

MELC:
1. Illustrates a random variable (discrete and continuous) - M11/12SP-IIIa-1
2. Distinguished between a discrete and a continuous random variable -M11/12SP-IIIa-2
3. Finds the possible values of a random variable -M11/12SP-IIIa-3

At the end of the learning activity sheets, you are expected to:
1. illustrate random variables
2. distinguishes between a discrete and continuous random variables
3. finds the possible values of a random variables

STUDY TIME!
I. Introductory Concept
Random you
In your previous study in mathematics, Variables and Probability
have learned Distribution
that experiment is any
activity, which can be done repeatedly under the similar condition. And the set of all possible
outcomes of an experiment is called sample space. You have also learned how to
systematically list the possible outcomes of a given experiment.
In this lesson, you will learn about variables that are associated with probabilities called
random variables. The word random is used often in everyday life. For example, you may hear
someone say “ We randomly decided to go out for dinner last night.” But is this really a
random event? No, this is a conscious decision that was made on the basis of other variables
such as hunger and the lack of satisfaction with other options such as cooking one’s own
dinner.
In statistics, the word random has a different meaning. Sometimes is random when it
varies by chance. For example, when rolling a six sided die there are six equally possible
outcomes, the observed outcome on any one roll is random. The variation of a random event
such as rolling a die can be described by the probability distributions that will be see in this
learning activity sheet.

Let’s Review!

Do you still remember me?

List the sample space of the following experiments.

EXPERIMENT No. of SAMPLE SPACE
1. Tossing two coins
2. Rolling a die
3. A drawing a spade from a deck of cards

3
Variable is a characteristics or attribute that can assume different values.
A Random Variable is a variable whose value is a numerical outcome of a random phenomenon.

 A random variable is denoted with a capital letter

 The probability distribution of a random variable x tells what the
possible values of X and how probabilities to those values.
A random variable can be discrete or continuous

Steps on how to determine the random variables on any events or experiments.

1. Determine the sample space. Assign letters that will represents each
outcome.
2. Count the number of the value of the random variable (Capital Letter

Example:
Tossing Three Coins
Suppose three coins are tossed. Let Y be the random variable representing the number of tails
that occur. Find the values of the random variable Y. Complete the table below.
Steps Solution
1. Determine the sample
space. Let H represent head The sample space for this experiment is:
Number of the
and T represent tail. S = { TTT,TTH,THT,HTT, HHT, HTH, THH, HHH}
Possible Outcome Random Variable Y

2. Count the number of tails (Number of Tails)

in each outcome in the TTT 3
sample space and assign TTH 2
this number to this THT 2
outcome. HTT 2
HHT 1
HTH 1
THH 1
HHH 0

So, the possible values of random variable Y are 0,1,2 & 3

T

A random variable is a discrete random variable if its set of possible outcomes is

countable.It represent count data.
Example: 1. Number of heads in three tosses of a fair coin.
2. The number of Grade 11 students of Amador-Bello High
School who passed National Achievement Test.
3. The number of Senior High School Teacher in Amador-
Bello High School.
A random Variable is a continuous random variable if it takes a values on a continuous
scale. Often, continuous random variables represent measured data.
Example: 1. Weight of the person
2. Height of the person
3. Percentage of the Grade 11 students of ABHS who passed
the
